Kpeme (TGKPE)

The port comprises of a phosphate loading jetty and a CBM mooring for tankers.

Tropical.

The Port of Kpeme is situated approx 32km E of Lome.

Harbour: Max LOA 199.99m, draught 11.8m, beam 32.26m, 63,519DWT. Offshore (Tanker berth): Max LOA 181.78m, 39,808DWT, maximum permissible draught at the tanker mooring is 8.2m due to swell.

Anchorage may be obtained about 1nm ESE of Kpeme Light. Good holding ground (sand and mud) in a depth of 14.0-16.0m.

A fairway buoy is moored 1nm ESE of the head of the W breakwater.

Mooring wires are provided free by the Port Authorities for securing to the mooring buoys. Mooring launches and a tug are in attendance. The loading position for the berth is about 20m off and parallel with the line of dolphins.

Pilotage is compulsory into or out of the port limits. The pilot boards outside the port limits and remain onboard during the vessels stay. Berthing takes place between 0600 and 1400hrs only. Departure is possible at anytime.

The port limits are fixed at a radius of 1nm off the berth.

Vertical clearance: For vessels loading phosphates the maximum height from waterline to hatch coaming should not exceed 14.5m. Submarine pipelines: A submarine pipeline extends 0.37nm E from the head of the jetty. A buoy marks the E end of the pipeline where the depth is 10.0m.

Range 1.8m. W'ly current.

Two tugs are available to assist in berthing at Phosphate Berth only. Tugs are ordered from Lome Port when necessary.

Prevailing winds: SW'ly. Swells of more than 1.8m and strong wind more than force 5 can occur. During the wet season (April to July) strong winds and heavy swell may delay shipping movements.

Vessels should send ETA 72 and 24 hours prior to arrival.

Loading takes place in daylight hours only and ceases at 1600hrs when a vessel loading must cast off and anchor for the night. While alongside main engines must be kept at immediate notice with the vessel at instant notice to cast off.
