Philipsburg (SXPHI)

The major port area of Philipsburg, the capital of the Dutch part of the island of St Maarten (St Martin), consists of two Cruise Piers, providing up to six berths. A Tender Jetty is located close North of these Cruise Piers. This Terminal area also includes a cargo quay for breakbulk with Ro-Ro facilities at the North and South ends. Philipsburg is also served by the Cole Bay (Kool Baai) Tanker Terminal consisting of two Open Bay Transfer Moorings, and storage tanks onshore, approx 2nm West of Great Bay (Groot Bay)

Philipsburg is situated in Groot Bay, in the SE area of the Dutch section of the island of St Maarten (St Martin).

Good anchorage may be obtained, in a depth of approx 11.0m, midway between the entrance points of the bay, with Witte Kaap bearing approx 110°. When there is no swell, anchorage in a depth of 8.0m, may be obtained approx 0.2nm further N. Due to the presence of submarine cables anchorage is prohibited in a rectangular area that encloses Klein Baai (18°01'N 063°04'W) and the W part of Groot Baai. The area is bounded by the following co-ordinates: ..... 18°01.4'N 063°03.3'W (shore) 18°00.5'N 063°03.3'W 18°00.5'N 063°04.2'W 18°01.0'N 063°04.2'W (shore).

From a position N of Proselyte Reef, the track leading NNE into the bay towards Philipsburg directional light clear of danger, with depths of more than 10.0m until between Witte Kaap and Fort Amsterdam, passing: ..... WNW of A.C Wathey Pier (0.4nm NNW of Witte Kaap). ESE of a lightbuoy (special) (0.15nm SE of Fort Amsterdam Light). Clear of mooring buoys (0.22nm SE and 0.55nm ESE) of Fort Amsterdam Light. It is recommended that vessels should not enter into the bay beyond the bearing of 270° on the W entrance point. The approach to the deepest berth on A.C. Wathey Pier has charted depths of more than 10.0m.

St Maarten is an alternative name for Philipsburg, and is the island on which it is located.

Compulsory for Groots Bay, including cruise liner piers, and available 24 hours a day. Pilotage is performed by Government pilots. Requests for pilots should be made 24 hours in advance of vessels arrival. Ships bound for the pier at Philipsburg should await the pilot at a max distance of 1nm from the line Point Blanche and Fort Amsterdam. The Pilot boards in position 18°00.38'N 063°04.15'W for vessels proceeding to Philipsburg or Cole Bay. Pilotage is optional for the Shell Texaco Oil Terminals in Cole Bay, although it is recommended for a vessel's first visit and available from Groots Bay, daylight berthing only.

Major light: Fort Amsterdam Light (wooden post 1m in height) (18°01'N 063° 04'W) attached to the wall of Fort Amsterdam.

Range 0.30m.

A tug is available.

Prevailing winds: E to S'ly Mar-Dec; N to E'ly Dec-Mar. A heavy ground swell from the N can make the bay uncomfortable as it sometimes sweeps all round the island and enters Groot Baai from the S. Port facilities and services may be subject to disruption, following severe hurricane force winds.
