Anchorages: No anchorage information available for this port. Svalbard is one of the last major areas of wilderness in Europe and includes all landmasses between 74 and 81 degrees North and between 10 and 35 degrees east, as well as the sea inside a territorial boundary stretching out 4 nautical miles from land. The total land area is about 63,000 kmІ and two thirds of this area is permanently covered by ice and glaciers. ICE AND CURRENT CONDITION ON THE PASSAGE Early in the summer, one can meet pack ice or observe ice sky already when level with Bjшrnшya (Bear Is.), and course is then held W-wards to run clear of the ice. As the ice often forms long tongues between wide and deep bays, vessels should not be to quick to steer E-wards again. With E-ly winds, it can happen that vessels must out to 70 nautical miles off the W coast of Spitsbergen because of much ice. Sveagruva is a mining facillity situated at 78° 00ґ N, 11° 00ґ E on the west coast of Spitsbergen, the largest island in the Svalbard archipelago. The facillity is connected to"Ny-Alesund" settlement which is the permanent home to around 30 persons serving the research station all year round.
