Lazarev (RULAZ)

The harbour piers are well sheltered from all winds except those from the NE by an extensive breakwater. The harbour serves as the main seaport for the Amurskiy Liman area and ferry crossing point to Pogibi on Sakhalin Island. The port is closed due to ice from Dec to the middle of Apr.

North Pacific Winter Seasonal Zone, Winter Oct 16 to Apr 15, Summer Apr 16 to Oct 15.

Lazarev is located on the N side of Mys Lazareva, Russian Far East, in the Tatar Strait close to Sakhalin Island.

Anchorage may be obtained off the port at the discretion of the pilot. Cargo vessels normally discharge into barges at an anchorage close N of the harbour, or move out to the anchorage during loading.

The least depth in the channel approaching Lazarev is 5.8m. It was reported that the channel in the harbour, 50m in width, has been dredged to a depth of 6.0m.

The stranded wreck of the Panamanian registered "Mago I", is conspicuous, lying on her side off Mys Lazareva, a short distance E of the harbour entrance.

Prevailing winds: Oct-May W-NW'ly, May-Aug SE-E'ly. Ice: The port of Lazarev and the nearby strait start to freeze in Nov and are closed to normal navigation by heavy ice from Dec to about the middle of Apr. Drift ice is still heavy in May and usually safe navigation cannot be resumed until June. Fog: Occurs in early April, becoming particularly thick and persistent during Jun and Jul, but ceasing at the beginning of Sep. Winds from the NE generally bring in dense fog although it will probably occur with any E wind.
