Vila Real de Santo Antonio (PTVRL)

It is mainly a fishing port but is also a popular centre of tourism in the summer months. The port is closed for commercial operations. Information for the port is retained should the port reopen.

Vila Real de Santo Antonio is a small port located on the W bank of Rio Guadiana, 2nm NNW of the entrance, in the S part of Portugal, approx 50km E of Faro.

Outer anchorage: Anchorage may be obtained in convenient depths anywhere off the entrance to Rio Guadiana. A recommended anchorage is in depths of approx 10.0m, 1.25nm S of Monte Gordo (37°11'N 007°27'W). Anchorage may be obtained in the stream off the port as directed by the Port Captain.

Directions: The approach to the river does not usually present any difficulty but mariners should note that shoal depths extend up to 1nm to seaward from the Portuguese side of the river and up to 1.5nm from the Spanish side of the river. The river is entered between Ponta da Areia (37°11.0'N 007°24.5'W), a flat sandy point, and the W side of Isla Canela (close E) a marshy, partly cultivated island, on which stands a tourist complex. Sandbanks and shoals extend 1.5nm S from Isla Canela. Molhe Oeste, extends SSE for approx 2,100m from Ponta de Santo Antonio to bound the W side of the entrance, and Dique de Levante, which is partly submerged at HW, extends approx 1,600m SSE from the W extremity of Isla Canela to the NW corner of Banco do O'Bril, a sandbank which dries, to form the E side. A light (white metal tower, red bands, 8m in height) is exhibited from the head of Molhe Oeste and a light (tower) is exhibited from the head of Dique de Levante which is also marked at intervals with beacons (radar reflectors). The entrance is approached over a bar which is marked by lightbuoys which are subject to frequent change. No attempt should be made to pass between the lightbuoys and the head of the breakwater. Bad weather from S makes the bar impassable, often extinguishing the lightbuoys and causing them to shift position.
