Aitape (PGATP)

The port is currently closed for commercial operations. Information for the port is retained should the port reopen. The port, which is not a port of entry, consists of a pier with berths on both sides of its outer end. The main exports are copra, cocoa and vanilla.

Aitape is located on the N coast midway between Vanimo and Wewak.

Approx 64,000t of cargo and 1,200TEU handled annually.

Anchorage which is fairly sheltered, may be obtained during the SE trades in depths from 27-31m, W of Seleo Island. Anchorage may also be obtained W of the S extremity of Tumleo Island during the SE trades in less depths, and off the SE end of the island in other seasons of the year.

There are several entrances into Aitape Roads, the principal of which are: From E: Between Angel Island (03°09'S 142°28'E) and Seleo Island (0.5nm N). From N and W: Between Ali Island (03°08'S 142°29'E) and Tumleo Island (4nm W). The approach to the main wharf has charted depths from 5.5m to 11.0m.

Not compulsory. Pilot available at 48 hours notice from Madang, call Aitape Port Control on VHF Ch 12/16. Pilots board vessels in position 03°08.3'S 142° 23.9'E.

From Rohm Point (03°08'S 142°21'E) to a position 3°08'S 142°24.2'E, then S to the coastline.

Range 1.4m.

No tugs available.

A heavy swell is invariably felt in the blight S of Rohm Point.
