Mozambique (MZMZQ)

It is a small coral island connected to the mainland by a bridge 3,500m in length, max weight allowance 10t.

Tropical.

The port is currently closed for commercial operations. Information for the port is retained should the port reopen. Mozambique Island is situated S of Nacala.

Vessels up to 9.1m draught can cross the bar at LW.

The port handles approx 6 vessels annually.

Anchorage may be obtained approx 1.5nm NE of Ilha de Goa in depths between 18.0-27.0m, sand and broken coral. Large numbers of vessels may anchor N of Ilha de Mozambique in depth of 5.0-28.0m. Vessels of light draught may anchor close NW of Ilha de Mozambique, in depths of 6.0-8.0m, between the island and Banco Leven. Caution is required when approaching this anchorage from N as the ingoing tide sets towards the bank. Vessels of greater draught should anchor NE of Ilha de Mozambique and Banco Leven in depths of approx 25.0m, sand and broken shell.

The harbour is entered through Canal do Norte on the N side of Ilha de Goa and through Canal da Fortaleza de Sao Sebastiao which passes NE of Ilha de Mozambique. The channels are marked by leading lights.

Cape Town Radio or Inmarsat are recommended for passing messages at long range. VHF: Ch 16.

Customs: An allowance of tobacco and spirits is allowed for each crew member. The bonded store is sealed for the duration of the vessel's stay in port. Immigration: Passengers require a visa (emergency visas can be issued on arrival). Crew can obtain a shore pass against surrender of a passport or Seaman's Book at the Immigration Office. Their documents are returned when the shore pass is surrendered on return to the vessel within shore leave hours. There are heavy penalties for non compliance.The agency boarding clerk will advise current shore leave hours in force at time of arrival.

Initial ETA, if possible, should be sent 7 days prior to arrival stating deepest arrival draught, last port of call and Master's name. Further ETA's should be sent 72, 48, 24 and 12 hours prior to arrival giving only date and time of arrival and any change in draught. ETA messages to be sent to agent only.

It is obligatory to display the Mozambican flag. It can be acquired locally.

Pratique is granted once alongside as part of the port clearance formalities. Ship Sanitation Control and Ship Sanitation Control Exemption Certificates can be renewed.
