Puerto Escondido (MXPXM)

Puerto Escondido is a small harbour, lying at NW end of a semi circular bay 0.75nm wide; it is one of the best natural harbours in Golfo de California. A tourist port for small cruise vessels and pleasure yachts with a "T" shaped pier and max depth of 8.0m. A fuel dock is provided at the Marina Puerto Escondido - Fuel Terminal however this is for vessels using the facilities at the marina. The port is strategically located within the Loreto-Nopolo and with recent development in the area it has potential to be one of the most important economic and tourist development poles in the region.

North Pacific Seasonal Tropical Area, Tropical Mar 1 to Jun 30 and Nov 1 to Nov 30, Summer Jul 1 to Oct 31 and Dec 1 to Feb 28/29.

Puerto Escondido is located 17km S of Loreto and 328km from La Paz, in the Sea of Cortez in Baja California Sur.

Max LOA 72.54m, beam 13.41m, draught 4m and 511DWT.

Anchorage is available at the waiting area, near the entrance to the port, this is used regularly by small boats. Anchorage may also be obtained in the outer harbour; the entrance is 25m wide, with depths over the bar of 2.9m.

The bay for Puerto Escondido Terminal is protected on its E side by Punta Coyote, a bluff headland, 23m high, which is the extremity of a peninsula joined to the mainland N by a narrow isthmus of sand dunes, this headland conceals the entrance. The entrance to the port is 25m wide. Within the inner bay there is a breakwater of rocks, 20m long, with a light standing at its head. The entrance channel to Marina Puerto Escondido has a depth of over 5.5m and a width of over 30m.

Pilots are not available and local knowledge is required.

A light (metal truncated pyramid tower 7m in height) is displayed from Punta Coyote

Variable. Tidal streams in the entrance are reported to be strong; rates of 4kts have been reported.

Prevailing wind: NW'ly and SW'ly. Hurricane season in the area runs from mid-August to mid-October.

East coast Mexico: Mobile, Alabama Radio. The stations work throughout 24 hours. Inmarsat communication is possible.

Allowances for officers and crew do not exist for personal possessions which must be kept onboard. Penalties for non-compliance will result in confiscation of the goods and fines. Immigration: Formalities depend on the nationality of the crew. Nationalities that are not restricted in Mexico can proceed ashore provided they have a shore pass which can be issued by the port agent upon request of the Master. Joining and off signing crew members have to be declared 24 hours prior to the time and date of arrival/departure. Vessel is cleared on arrival and departure.

..... On arrival to Puerto Escondido Terminal, the Master must present 4 copies of the following documentation: Document 1. Last Port Clearance 2. Crew List 3. Crew Personal Effects List 4. Stores List 5. International Maritime Declaration of Health 6. Vaccination List 7. Ports of Call List 8. List of Ship's Particulars 9. Cargo Manifest, if any 10. Passenger List 11. Ballast Declaration 12. Labour Permit For Crew Members The following are also required: 1. International Tonnage Certificate 2. Load Line Certificate 3. Ship's Register 4. Safety Equipment and Emergency Radio Equipment Certificates Documents are received by the Harbour Master, Health Inspector, Immigration authorities, Customs authorities, Agricultural Inspector. There are no special forms for completion.

All ETA's have to be sent 48 hours prior to arrival of the vessel at Puerto Escondido Terminal. Additional ETA's have to be sent during office hours each 24 hours prior to arrival of the vessel. The ETA message should include: ..... 1. Arrival draught 2. Number of crew and if healthy 3. Vessel's main particulars such as LOA, GT, beam 4. Flag and Port of Registry 5. Cargo to be loaded/discharged

Cargo documents have to be in Puerto Escondido Terminal in order for the vessel to be programmed.
