The port serves vessels operating in the offshore oil industry in the Gulf of Campeche. .

Ciudad del Carmen is located on Isla del Carmen at the mouth to Laguna de Terminos in the Bay of Campeche.

Approx 400,000t of cargo handled annually.

Outer anchorage is obtained 8nm NNW of Punta Atalaya, in depths of 7.0-9.0m, mud bottom, good holding ground and 6nm N of the same point in a depth of 5.0m. Anchorage may be obtained by coasters close to Muelle Fiscal (18°38.9'N 091° 50.7'W). A gas pipeline crosses the harbour, from a position close SE of Punta Atalaya Light (18°39'N 091°51'W), in a SW direction to the opposite shore.

From a position in the vicinity of the lightbuoy (safe water, 18°43'N 091° 54'W) the alignment 180° of Hacienda Xicalango Leading Lights leads S for 2.5nm. The leading lights are as follows: Front light: Metal post, 15.0m in height, 18°38'N 091°54'W. Rear light: Metal tower, 12.0m in height, 0.2nm S of the front light. Then the track leads SE for 2.2nm then E to the port of Ciudad del Carmen, passing (with positions from the front light): E of Punta Xicalango (3nm NNW), then: SW and S of Bajo de la Guitarra (marked by a lightbuoy, 2nm NE), then: Close SW of Punta Atalaya Light (3.25nm ENE), then: The route leads SE to the anchorage off the town, or to an alongside berth or continues SSE into Laguna de Terminos, passing NE of Bajo de los Bagres Lightbuoy (18°38'N 091°51'W).

Punta Atalaya Light (18°39'N 091°51'W) Hacienda Xicalango Front Leading Light, (18°38'N 091°54'W), white truncated pyramidal tower, red bands, 28m in height. Hacienda Xicalango Rear Leading Light; (18°38.4'N 091°54.5'W), white truncated conical masonry tower, red bands, 28m in height and approx 185m S of front light. Punta De Zacatal Light (18°37'N 091°52'W) truncated pyramidal tower, 14m in height).

El Zacatal Bridge, located approx 2nm SW of the port, links Isla del Carmen to Punta Zacatal. The vertical clearance beneath the bridge is not known.

Mean max range 0.4m, min 0.0m. The inbound steam has a rate of 1.5kts and outbound up to 2kts.

The following coastal radio stations are recommended: West Coast Mexico: International station and Mobile Radio (USA). East Coast Mexico: Mobile, Alabama Radio. The stations work throughout 24 hours. Inmarsat communication is possible. VHF: Port: Ch 16, 12, & 20.

Allowances for officers and crew do not exist for personal possessions which must be kept onboard. Penalties for non-compliance will result in confiscation of the goods and fines. Immigration: Formalities depend on the nationality of the crew. Nationalities that are not restricted in Mexico can proceed ashore provided they have a shore pass which can be issued by the port agent upon request of the Master. Joining and off signing crew members have to be declared 24 hours prior to the time and date of arrival/departure. Vessel is cleared on arrival and departure.

On arrival, the Master must present the following documentation with 4 copies of each: ..... Document 1. Last Port Clearance 2. Crew List 3. Crew Personal Effects List 4. Stores List 5. Ballast Declaration The following are also required: 1. International Tonnage Certificate 2. Load Line Certificate 3. Ship's Register 4. Safety Equipment and Emergency Radio Equipment Certificates Documents are received by the Harbour Master, Health Inspector, Immigration Authorities, Customs Authorities, Agricultural Inspector. There are no special forms for completion.

Must be sent 72 hours prior to arrival of the vessel at the port. Additional ETA's have to be sent each 24 hours and 12 hours prior to arrival of the vessel. All messages should be sent during office hours so that the vessel can be scheduled at the Port Programme Meeting which is held daily. The ETA message should include: ..... 1. Arrival draught 2. Number of crew and if healthy 3. Vessel's main particulars such as LOA, GT, beam 4. Flag and port of registry 5. Cargo to be loaded/discharged

Cargo documents have to be in the port in order for the vessel to be programmed.

Pratique will be granted by the Port Authorities once they arrive onboard the vessel. Free pratique is not granted by radio. Vessels arriving from South America have to be fumigated. Ship Sanitation Control Certificate (SSCC) can be renewed.
