Nouakchott (MRNKC)

The port handles containers, bulk, breakbulk, LPG and liquid facilities. Imports include wheat, cement, clinker, flour, sugar, semolina, milk, containers and general equipment. Exports include plaster, animal skins and fish.

Nouakchott the capital of Mauritania. Located in the southwestern part of the country.

LOA 264.3m, beam 38.02m, draught 13m, 63,567DWT.

Approx 5,000,000t of cargo, 200,000TEU and 800 vessels handled annually.

Can be obtained approx 1nm W of the head of the pier in depths between 8.0m and 10.0m. The holding ground is good generally but there are patches of hard sand. heavy swells may be experienced in the anchorage from Jan to Mar and heavy rain from Jul to Sep. Vessel's engine should be kept ready for use as bad weather can occur without warning. The coastline offers no safe anchorage in adverse weather conditions.

There is a landfall lightbuoy at the entrance to the channel 3km from the entrance to the dock. There are a set of leading light beacons to follow the channel in at night. The channel width is 150m, depth 11.0m, with a 400m turning basin, marked by 2 beacons, off the pier head.

Compulsory. Pilots can be contacted on VHF Ch 16. Pilot boards at the Landfall Lightbuoy (17°59'N 016°04'W). Pilotage available 0800-2000hrs.

A lighthouse located on the extreme SW point of the protective jetty (17°59'N 016°1.5'W) is visible from 16nm. A lightbuoy is moored 0.7nm WNW (17°59'N 016°02'W) of the head of the pier. A lightbuoy is moored close W of an obstruction lying 0.57nm SW of the head of the pier.

Range 1.44m. Current normally runs N-S at 0.5kts, but occasionally reverses on some days.

Compulsory, there are 2 x 900hp and 1x 2026hp tugs available.

Prevailing winds: NNW'ly. A large swell occurs between Jan and Mar and poor weather conditions can occur at short notice. Heavy rainfall can be expected between Jul and Sep.
