An easy accessible port with numerous public and private jetties. The main exports are rice and rice products, timber is also handled. Imports are negligible.

Bassein (formerly Pathein) is situated 121km above the mouth of the Bassein River.

During the NE monsoon good anchorage may be obtained on the SE side of Thamihla Kyun in depths of approx 9.0m with Thamihla Light structure bearing 321°.

The entrance to the Bassein River is obstructed by a bar with a least depth of 6.0m. Vessels should approach Diamond Island, at the mouth of the river from S, except in NE monsoon. Approach from E needs great care on account of strong tides, outlying reefs and shoals. If proceeding to the anchorage SE of Thamihla Kyun, steer to pass 1nm N of that island, rounding the lightbuoy marking the shoal extending NNE from Baroni rock (0.5nm NNE of Thamihla Kyun). Then steer to pass E of the lightbuoy moored 0.5nm E of Thamihla Kyun Light structure, and then to the anchorage. This approach is not recommended during SW monsoons. If approaching from the S do not approach Alguada reef closer than 3nm. The summit of Haing Gyi Kyun (16°00.4'N 094°20.4'E) bearing 020° and well open E of Thamihla Kyun clears the shoal of Alguada reef and Phaeton shoals. After passing Phaeton shoals steer for the anchorage SE of Thamihla Kyun. The river is only 0.2nm in width at Bassein.
