Fomboni (KMFOU)

The port is very small and consists of a town and an open roadstead in Fomboni, visited by small coastal vessels only. It is not a good protection against swell and discharge operations are risky, breakbulk cargo can be loaded and unloaded.

The port of Fomboni is situated on the island of Moheli, in the Comoros group, off E Africa.

LOA 80m, draught 2.4m.

Anchorage can be obtained on the alignment of the approach leading marks in depths of not less than 16.0m, with a post, (0.85nm NW of Beacon "A"), on the coastal reef, bearing less than 267° and open S of a beacon, (black and white), 1.75nm WNW of Fomboni.With SE winds anchorage is good although there is sometimes a troublesome swell, during the NW monsoon (Nov-Feb) the swell is very heavy and the anchorage is not safe. Anchorage for small craft can be obtained in Anse Tsoa, (1nm SE of Anse Dourney).

The directions for Fomboni are as follows: Leading Marks: From sea the alignment (195°) of the following marks leads to the anchorage in Anse Doueny. Beacon "A", (white chevron on house), 12°16.5'S 043°44.5'E, overlooking a beach in front of the town; Beacon "B", (wooden post, whitewashed metal topmark), 0.37nm SSW of Beacon "A".

Prevailing winds: Variable. From approx Nov to Feb the NW monsoon causes very heavy swell which makes the anchorage unsafe. Storm signals indicating the locality threatened by a cyclone are displayed from the signal station.
