Anchorages
The recommended anchorage for larger vessels is in a depth of 18.0m with Pillar Reef Light bearing 245°, in line with the conspicuous minaret at Malindi, at a distance of 1.1nm. Smaller vessels may obtain anchorage in depths of 11.0m, brown mud, on the alignment of the lights in line bearing 212.5°, at a distance of 0.75nm from the front light. In spite of some swell, the berth provides good shelter during the SW monsoon. Depths decrease gradually towards the shore, but anchoring in less than 9.0m is not advisable if there is any swell. If proceeding to the anchorage for smaller vessels, care is necessary to avoid shoal patches on the N side of a line joining the left tangent of the tall building and the water tower close WNW of it.
Approaches
Approaching from the S or E, keep to seaward of Griffon Patches until the conspicuous minaret (03°12.8'N 040°07.3'E) at Malindi bears 270° at a distance of 4nm. Then steer to keep the left tangent of the tall building (white 3 storied house with a water tower 14m in height close WNW), 1nm NNW of the conspicuous minaret, bearing 283° ahead which leads to the anchorage for larger vessels. Approaching from the NE, by day steer for the conspicuous minaret at Malindi bearing not less than 222°. At night keep SE of the alignment of the lights in line bearing 212.5° and be guided by Malindi Light (03°13.4'S 040°07.6'E) and Pillar Reef Light (0.72nm N of Malindi Light). The lights in line bearing 212.5° are difficult to identify in the day: The front light (red beacon with white stripe) is situated on the seafront 0.35nm SW of Pillar Reef Light. The rear light is situated 60m from the front light. Several detached shoals lie 1.25nm NNE of the front of the light.

Principal navigation aids
Malindi Light (03°13.4'S 040°07.6'E) is a white framework tower standing 13m in height in a position 1.4nm N of Chanoni Point. Also there is Pillar Reef Light which is a white concrete column, 5m in height in a position 0.72nm N of Malindi Light.
