Wakkanai (JPWKJ)

The port handles vehicles, oil, cement and general cargoes. The entrance to the port is between two breakwaters, strong N'ly to NW'ly winds may cause a heavy sea and swell to be set up in the area.

Summer zone for ships over 100m in length and Winter Seasonal Area for ships of 100m or less in length. Winter Dec 1 to Feb 28/29, Summer Mar 1 to Nov 30.

Wakkanai is situated at the northern extremity of Hokkaido in Soya-wan.

Max LOA 241m, beam 30m, 30,000DWT.

Approx 1,600,000t of cargo, 7,400 vessels and 330,000 passengers handled annually.

An anchorage area is situated ENE of the breakwater light in depths of approx 14m. Quarantine anchorage is approx 0.8nm N of the head of North Breakwater.

The approach to Tenpoku Wharf No 1 and the fairway has been dredged to a depth of 10.0m, draught limitation is approx 9.0m. Entry is made between the head of the N breakwater and the NW end of East Breakwater. The fairway leading to the entrance at the breakwaters has been dredged to a depth of 12.8m; from the entrance to Tenpoku Wharf, the fairway has been dredged to a depth of 11.9m. Irregular seas occur at the entrance with prolonged NW to N winds.

The harbour limit is a line joining Noshappu Misaki and Koetoi Saki, 4.5nm SE.

Koetoi Saki Light, exhibited from a red round tower with black bands, 13m in height, 0.8nm N of Koetoi Saki; marks dangers extending N from Koetoi Saki. A radio tower (45°23.5'N 141°41.5'E) with parabolic antennae, standing on the roof of a white building, and marked by obstruction lights. Another radio mast, which attains an elevation of 252m and which is marked by obstruction lights, stands approx 0.3nm N. Lights are exhibited on the ends of several breakwaters within the harbour.

The port may become icebound between Dec-Apr. Entry or sailing after sunset is possible, subject to Harbour Master's approval.

Range max 0.37m; min 0.04m.

One tug available, "Hikari" 3,000hp.

Strong winds, over 20kts, are 4.5% per year. Summer season SW-SSW. Winter season NNW-W.
