Ofunato (JPOFT)

The port serves the city of Ofunato which is a fishery and industrial centre. Large volumes of raw materials for the cement industry are imported.

Ofunato is situated on the NE coast of Honshu in Iwate Prefecture.

LOA 179.97m, beam 29.8m, 40,000DWT.

Approx 2,960,000t of cargo, 3,000TEU and 8,000 vessels handled annually.

Anchorage is available in depths of 40m. The quarantine anchorage is established 0.75nm WSW of Kori Saki; the holding ground is reported to be good but unsuitable in bad weather. Anchorage positions (by WGS-84): ..... 39°00.70'N 141°44.80'E Under 5,000GT 39°00.60'N 141°44.90'E 5,000-15,000GT 39°00.40'N 141°45.25'E Over 15,000GT Anchorage is obtainable, with local knowledge, approx 0.5nm from the head of Ofunato Wan, 0.25nm from the W shore, in depths of 15.0-16.0m; the bottom is mainly mud, but the holding ground is not uniformly good, and squalls sometimes blow down from the mountains. Caution: A submarine cable is laid between the W side of Sango Shima and the shore W, and is marked by beacons.

Approach is via a channel with a max permissible draught of 14.0m.

Not compulsory but recommended as there are many fishing cultivations in the harbour. Pilots board in position 39°00.7'N 141°44.8'E (under 5,000GT) or 39° 00.4'N 141°45.1'E (over 5,000GT) during daylight hours only.

The harbour limit of Ofunato Ko is a line joining Goishi Saki and Kori Saki.

Range max 1.4m; min 0.15m.

1 x 2,600hp and 1 x 600hp available. Large tugs of 2,900hp and 3,200hp can be arranged from Kamaishi with advance notice.
