The port generally has deep water and therefore can be accessed by large crude oil vessels to the refinery. The port cargo complex is made up of 4 public wharves: ..... Iwakuni is situated on the eastern coast of Yamaguchi Prefecture on the W coast of Hiroshima Bay in the Inland Sea.

LOA 315m, draught 15.4m, beam 45m, 150,000DWT.

Approx 14,000,000t of cargo, 53,000TEU, 7,000 vessels and 19,000 passengers handled annually.

Quarantine anchorage: 34°10.5'N 132°16.7'E. The quarantine anchorage is situated 1.75nm NE of the mouth of Imazu Kawa. Good sheltered anchorage is afforded in depths from 10.0-15.0m, mud, in the bight to the SW of the mouth of Monzen Kawa. The pilot assigns anchor berths.

Approaching Iwakuni from: ..... 1. Hashirashima Suido and on reaching Hiroshima Wan No 2 Fairway Lightbuoy (34° 08.0'N 132°22.0'E), alter course to bring Iwakuni Ko N Breakwater Light (34° 11.4'N 132°14.2'E) ahead, bearing 298°, and proceed to the quarantine anchorage. 2. Obatake Seto, steer to pass between Kabuto Shima (34°07.0'N 132°19.0'E) and the lightbuoys marking the E boundary of the prohibited area. Then steer for the quarantine anchorage.

Not compulsory. Pilots are available at the quarantine anchorage from one hour after sunrise to one hour before sunset, when required.

Red Lighthouse, Iwakuni North Breakwater (34°11.4'N 132°14.2'E). A neon light is exhibited at a height of 65m in a position 0.3nm SW of Shozoku Hana and another neon light is exhibited 0.6nm further SW. A tower, (red light) stands at an elevation of 205m, 1.75nm SW of Shozoku Hana and another red tower (red light), elevation 207m stands on Mekada Yama 0.5nm further S. An aeronautic light stands at Iwakuni airfield, in position 34°08.7'N 132° 13.6'E.

Due to Iwakuni airport, navigation is prohibited in the area between the line joining Iwakuni Offings Nos B, C and D lightbuoys (N, E and S cardinal) and the coast to the W, except by permission of the Commander of Iwakuni Airport. Caution: When a tanker carrying liquefied gas is alongside the LPG Pier (34° 11.7'N 132°14.7'E), a red and white flag by day, or a red light at night, will be shown at the pierhead; other vessels must not approach within 50m of the pier. Close E of the Timber Ponds, an 'L' shaped submerged jetty has been constructed. A light is exhibited from the shore end of this jetty.

Spring rise 3.3m, neap rise 2.5m, mean level above datum 1.9m.

Tugs: Four x 3,000hp, 2 x 2,500hp. They will usually join at the quarantine anchorage.

Prevailing winds: SW'ly.
