Hososhima (JPHSM)

Hososhima port is situated at position 32° 27.192'N 131° 40.028'E. There is a town and a harbor area in two sections. The port is divided into a commercial port and an industrial port. Shirahama port forms part of the commercial port complex and is protected by a breakwater projecting 0.45nm N. It is built on reclaimed land on the NW side of Yo Shima. Take Shima lies 0.6n NW of Yo Shima and forms the SE entrance point to the industrial port.

Hososhima is situated at Ozue Wan which is a bay about 37 miles SW of Tsurumi Saki.

LOA 260m, Max draught 10m, 40,000DWT.

Approx 3,600,000 t of cargo, 32,000 TEU and 3,200 vessels handled annually.

Anchorage can be obtained in about 15m, sand, good holding ground, in an area approximately 0.5nm SW of Oto Shima (32°27.92'N 131°40.11'E). The anchorage is exposed in strong NE winds which send in heavy seas. A quarantine anchorage lies 1nm NE of Hososhima Ko Light (32°25,42'N 131° 41.13'E).

The commercial port is entered N of Matsuga Hana. Draught limit in the channel is 10.0m.

Pilotage is not compulsory but available from sunrise to 1 hour prior to sunset. The pilot usually boards in the vicinity of the Quarantine Anchorage (32°26.12'N 131°41.92'E). In adverse weather the pilot may board inside the breakwater.

The harbour limit is a line joining Matsuga Hana, a point on the N side of the S peninsula, 0.25nm NW of its E extremity; Ikue Bae, 1.75nm NNE; Oto Shima, 1.5nm WNW; and the mainland SW.

Five radio towers stand near the summit of Komeno Yama (32°25.0'N 131°40.0'E) and from two of them white lights are exhibited. On Takatomi Yami (32°25.2'N 131°41.2'E) near Hososhima Ko Lighthouse there are three radio towers and a radio direction signal station. A light is exhibited from the head of a breakwater which projects 0.45nm N from reclaimed land on the NW side of Yo Shima, 44m high, which lies close off and is connected to Kannon Saki, the NE extremity of Maki Shima.

There are no restrictions in place. However it should be noted that pilots are only available as follows: Entry: Not possible after sunset. Sailing: Anytime.

Range max 2.44m, min -0.35m. A periodical rise in the level of the sea in Hososhima is regularly experienced and lasts approx 10 minutes; the range varies from 0.2m in calm weather to more than 0.6m during a storm.

1 x 2,900 and 1 x 2,700hp tugs are available with fire fighting capability.

Winds are usually S during the spring and summer, N in autumn and W in winter. Generally low sea states can be expected throughout. However, E or NE winds will raise a sea. At the time of a typhoon, small vessels can seek shelter in the commercial port, but larger vessels must proceed to Seto Naikai or elsewhere.
