Sanremo (ITSRE)

San Remo is mainly a yacht harbour, with few commercial facilities except for fishing and passenger vessels. The harbour is man made and very congested.

Summer.

San Remo is situated in NW Italy near the French border. The coast is aligned E-W with mountains backing the coast line to the North. San Remo is a chief port on the Italian Riveria.

Draught 4.3m.

There are two anchorage areas, one is located 0.75nm W of the entrance and the other about 0.75nm E of the entrance. Holding conditions are good in mud and sand bottom. The anchorages are fully exposed to winds and waves from the E clockwise through to the W. Heavy SW'ly swells combine with local waves to cause hazardous conditions.

Approaches: The approach channel leads NW from a position about 0.3nm SE of the entrance. There are depths of 10.0m in the entrance. Vessels should remain at least 25m off Molo Sud Head to avoid shoal water. Vessels entering and leaving the port should navigate on the starboard side of the channel. Caution: Sewer outfalls extend 0.6nm seaward from 0.5nm W of the harbour entrance, 0.25nm seaward from Punta San Martino 0.5nm E of the entrance and 0.5nm seaward, 0.75nm E of the entrance.

The outer limits are defined by Eastern and Western breakwaters.

A light structure (green mast) stands on the head of Molo Foraneo which should be given a berth of at least 60m. A breakwater marked at its head by a light structure (green post, 2m in height) extends approx 110m WNW from Molo Foraneo, 50m within its head. The head of Molo Sud is white with a red band and is marked by a light structure (red metal column on pedestal) 5m in height. A rough spur, marked at its head by another light structure, extends 0.05nm NNW from Molo Sud, 0.05nm within its head. A light structure (green mast) 5m in height, marks Torrente di San Francesco which enters the sea on the N side of the quay situated on the N side of the harbour.

Range 0.3m. Currents are limited to 0.5kt, setting W.

Prevailing winds: NW'ly. Visibility is generally good. During the warm season, night and early morning, visibility is frequently reduced to 1-2nm in haze/fog. During winter, reduction in visibility occurs during cloudy or rainy weather. The inner harbour is exposed to E'ly winds which will affect berthed vessels. However, vessels can ride out the heavy weather by doubling lines or employing alternative mooring tactics. Spring: Strong SW'ly winds are possible throughout the season, but the strongest occur in Mar/Apr. Summer: A season of good settled weather with occasional SW'ly winds, which has no effect on harbour operations. Thunderstorms occur but are scattered. Autumn: Usually lasts only for the month of Oct and there is a visible change in the weather from settled summer to winter by the end of the month. SW'ly winds frequently increase through the month. Winter: Conditions are wet and cool with frequent squalls. The early morning usually sees N'ly winds becoming SW'ly or SE'ly in the afternoon. SW'ly winds can reach 34 to 47kts. E'ly winds can produce overcast skies and swell which can pass through the port entrance.
