Siracusa (ITSIR)

The port is safe and protected with facilities for general and bulk cargoes. The main exports are fruit, cement and fertilisers. The entrance is 1,200m in width with a depth of 25.0-30.0m and over 1,700m of quays in the Old Port (Porto Marmoreo) and the main harbour (Porto Grande). Most commercial traffic passes through the main port where water and provisions are available. Bunkers are floated down by barge from Augusta (to the N of the port) and small repairs can be made.

Siracusa is situated on the SE coast of Sicily.

Draught 8.38m, DWT 30,000.

Anchorage can be obtained in Porto di Siracusa as convenient in depths of 7.0m to 15.0m, mud, but the holding ground is not good. The deepest part of the harbour is the S, where the holding ground is better than in the N part.

Directions: A vessel approaching the harbour from N should give Isola Ortigia a wide berth so as to clear Scoglio dei Cani. Vessels should enter on the line of the leading light structures. When Castello Maniace Lighthouse bears more than 028°, the vessel will be inside the shoals on both sides of the entrance, and course may be altered for the anchorage.

Punta Castelluccio Light is exhibited from an octagonal tower with red bands surmounting a dwelling, 8m in height, standing on Punta Castelluccio. Leading lights: Caderini Light, the front light, is exhibited from a tower with red and white chequers, 8m in height and attached to some white buildings standing on the W shore of the harbour, 1.1nm WSW of Castello Maniace. Carozzieri Light, the rear light, is exhibited from a masonry tower with red and white chequers, 15m in height and standing in front of a white building situated 0.55nm W of Caderini Light. Caderini and Carrozzieri Lights in line, bearing 267°, lead through the middle of the entrance to the harbour. A light is exhibited from a green mast, 3m in height, on the SE side of the entrance to La Darsena. Caution: The lights of motor vehicles proceeding along the main road W of these lights and intermittently obscured by foliage can, at times, be mistaken for the leading lights and therefore caution is necessary.

Passage is prohibited in the W side of the harbour due to sea plane operations.

Immigration will board after vessel's arrival (at anchorage or at berth). In the case of a passenger vessel, the immigration authorities will board the vessel on arrival requesting the following documentation: ..... 1. Crew List 2. Passenger List 3. Nationality List 4. Cruise Itinerary. For general cargo vessels, immigration authorities require a Crew List only. For vessels from EU, shore passes are not required but for vessels arriving from other countries, shore passes are required. Vessels shore passes are accepted.

Should be advised to agent 72, 48, 24 and 12 hours prior to arrival advising master's requirements and if possible include the last port of call and cargo and passengers in transit.

Vessels can effect loading/unloading operations after cargo and vessel have been cleared by customs. Passenger vessels can effect operations before immigration and/or health officers board the vessel. The port authority requires all cargoes data to be submitted together with the vessel's arrival notice at least 24 hours before the vessel's arrival in the port.

If a vessel arriving from a non-EU port requires free pratique, master can request free pratique 12 hours prior to arrival by cable or radio. Otherwise, free pratique will be given on vessel's arrival at anchorage or on berthing. A valid Ship Sanitation Control Certificate is always required.
