Reggio Calabria (ITREG)

The harbour consists of an artificial basin, protected from the W by Molo di Ponente, which extends nearly 0.5nm N from the coast close N of the mouth of Torrente Annunziata. The port mainly handles general cargo, dry bulk and passengers.

Reggio Calabria port is situated on the eastern side of the Messina Strait.

Max LOA 300m, draught 13.0m.

The anchorage to the N of the harbour is in Rada dei Giunchi. This is one of the safest anchorages in the Messina Strait. The bottom is good holding ground. Anchorage S of the harbour can be obtained in Rada dei Giunchi. This anchorage is sheltered from winds between N and E but is untenable with strong winds from other directions. The currents in this anchorage are strong and irregular.

Vessels entering the harbour should steer for a position about 0.125nm N of the head of Molo di Ponente before turning S to enter the harbour as eddy currents off the harbour entrance may affect manoeuvring. When passing through the entrance, a berth of about 30m should be given to some above water blocks close to the E side of the entrance.

With S winds, vessels should berth alongside the mole heading S. With N winds vessels may be turned inside the harbour. Moderate sized vessels wishing to berth alongside the quays on the S side of the harbour can also be turned inside the harbour.

Compulsory for vessels over 500GT. Pilots available throughout 24 hours. There are 2 pilots available. Pilots monitor VHF Ch 12. Vessels are boarded by a pilot 1nm W of the green light at the harbour entrance.

A light is exhibited from a metal column surmounting a pedestal, the whole 10m in height and painted with black and white bands, standing at the head of Molo di Ponente.

No tugs available. If required they can be ordered from Messina.

The customs allowance is 1 carton of cigarettes and 1 bottle of spirit or equivalent not exceeding the value of 90 Euro. Fines vary from 2 to 10 times the value of taxes included on the goods exceeding the above mentioned value. Immigration officials will board on arrival. Clearance for crew and passengers is normally granted in 10-15 minutes.

Should be advised to agent 48, 24 and 12 hours prior to arrival advising the following:

Harbour regulations for Reggio Callabria include: ..... 1. Vessels must proceed with care and are forbidden to: a. Exceed 5kts, b. To pass through the harbour entrance at the same time as another vessel, or c. To use the whistle or siren except as required by Colregs. 2. Small craft within 1nm of the harbour entrance, must give way to vessels entering or leaving. Vessels impeded by small craft should sound at least 4 blasts. 3. Vessels are forbidden to stop or anchor within 0.5nm of the harbour entrance. 4. Vessels leaving have precedence over vessels arriving, but vessels should not begin to leave if another vessel is already entering. 5. Naval vessels have precedence over merchant vessels. 6. Ferries have precedence over naval and merchant vessels, but ferries which reverse direction must do so outside the harbour. 7. Fishing, including fishing for sport, is prohibited within 1nm of the harbour entrance.

Pratique should be applied for through vessel's agent before arrival. Radio pratique is possible. Ship Sanitation Control Certificate and Ship Sanitation Control Exemption Certificates can be renewed if expired.
