Lipari (ITLIP)

Lipari is the main island of the Aeolian Islands. The best anchorage is in front of the west and south side of the island between Le Formiche and Punta La Grotticelle.

Lipari is situated on the E coast of an island of the same name. Lipari Island is one of seven which make up the Aeolian group, the other islands being Vulcano, Salina, Alicudi, Filicudi, Panarea and Stromboli.

Draught 5.8m, 40,000DWT

Approx 95 vessels visit the port annually.

Anchorage can be obtained 0.3nm WSW of Punta Cappelluzza (38°28.8'N 014° 58.8'E), the SE end of Sciarra di Monte Rosa, 0.1nm S of a building on the shore, in depths of 29-40m, sand, good holding. Caution: Between this anchor berth and Molo di Pignataro, in the vicinity of a reddish coloured length of coast which is subject to frequent landslides, there is a very deep hollow where attempting to anchor would be dangerous. Anchorage can be obtained off Porticello, taking care to avoid the prohibited anchorage and fishing areas.

Pilotage is compulsory for vessels over 500GT and available during daylight hours only. Pilot boards approx 1nm SE of Pignataro (38°28.5'N 014°57.8'E). The service is provided by the Pilotage Corporation at Milazzo.

A light is exhibited from a post 7m in height, at the head of Porticello Pier.

Anchoring, stopping and landing are prohibited in the vicinity of the shore extending S of Marina Corta 38°28.0'N 014°57.4'E) owing to the danger of cliff falls.

Winds from the NE and SE quadrants are dangerous at all the piers.

Messina or Roma Radio throughout 24 hours. Inmarsat communication is possible. VHF: Port: Ch 16, 11 throughout 24 hours. Pilots: Ch 12.

The customs allowance is 1 carton of cigarettes and 1 bottle of liquor or equivalent not exceeding the value of 90 Euro. Fines vary from 2 to 10 times the value of taxes included on the goods exceeding the above mentioned value. Immigration will board on arrival. Clearance to crew/passengers is normally granted in 10-15 minutes.
