Ischia (ITISH)

Ischia is the main port of Ischia Island which is the largest of all the islands in the Bay of Naples. The port handles passenger ferries.

The island of Ischia is off the W coast of Italy, close to Naples.

Anchorage W of the Aragonese Castle: 40°44.4'N 013°57.8'E, depth 25.0m. Anchorage E of the Aragonese Castle: 40°43.6'N 013°58.3'E, depth 35m.

Sea buoy, fairways and channels: The harbour is approached from Canale d'Ischia, the approach channel has a least depth of 5.3m. The harbour entrance, width 37m, least depth 4.4m, is marked by lights, W side (green tower 3m in height), E side (red tower, 3m in height). The E entrance light is only visible (196°-217°), the sector clears the shoals on both sides of the channel SSW of Molo di Sopraflutto Head.

There is a speed limit of 3kts within the harbour.

Winds from SW, WSW and N all make the entrance difficult. With strong S winds caution is necessary during the ebb stream as this generates a moderately strong current in the entrance.

The entrance to the harbour lies within a circle radius 500m centred on Molo di Sopraflutto Light (40°44.9'N 013°56.5'E). Vessels about to transit the area must sound one long blast. Vessels departing the harbour have right of way. Only one vessel at a time can manoeuvre within the harbour. Vessels berthed on the E side of the harbour have precedence over those at W berths when establishing a sequence for departure. Passenger ferries have precedence over all other vessels entering the harbour. Vessels on passage must remain clear of the entrance area.
