Alghero (ITAHO)

Alghero is shallow and suited to local coastal traffic, private pleasure vessels and a fast ferry service. The port consists of two main quays, sheltered by the walls of the old town, and a large marina with provisions, fuel and fresh water available.

Summer Zone for vessels over 100m in length and Winter Seasonal Area for ships 100m or less in length, Winter Dec 16 to Mar 15, Summer Mar 16 to Dec 15.

Alghero is situated on the NW Sardinian coast, Italy.

Approach and entry: The harbour is approached via a 300m long channel, dredged to 5.0m over a width of 70m. Alghero is approached through Rada di Alghero and entered between the heads of Molo Sud and Nuova Molo di Sottoflutto.

Available. No licensed pilots. Mariners with good local knowledge can be employed to provide assistance.

On its SW side of the channel, there is a buoy light beacon (starboard hand) situated 250m W of the head of Diga Nord. The harbour entrance lies between the head of Diga Nord and a short spur extending N from near the root of Diga Sur, marked by a light structure (green mast) 5.0m in height. Capo Caccia Light 40°33.7'N., 008°09.9'E (distinctive, dark, sheer sided promontory).

Draught limitations make this port suitable for small vessels only. Stopping within 500m of the harbour entrance is prohibited. There is a speed limit of 4kts throughout the harbour. Vessels must remain 30m clear of the moles forming the harbour entrance. The shallow harbour can be affected by swell.

Thickening cloud on the summit of Monte Doglia (40°37.7'N., 008°14.8'E) indicates S'ly or SW'ly winds. Thick mist on the coast indicates W'ly or NW'ly winds. The SW'ly wind (Libeccio) prevails along this part of the coast and can be difficult, often lasting up to 8 days. When these conditions are likely mariners should seek shelter at Porte Conte. During the NW'ly wind (Maestrale), which can last up to 3 days, vessels should not be anchored near Alghero.
