Port of Salaya (INSAL)

The port consists of Essar Bulk Terminal, a jetty handling coal, bauxite, limestone and fertiliser.

Arabian Sea Seasonal Tropical Area, Tropical Sep 1 to May 31, Summer Jun 1 to Aug 31.

Salaya is located on the southern shore of the Gulf of Kutch, on the NW coast, 27nm E of Okha.

Draught 17.7m, 100,000DWT.

The port offers two anchorages: Large vessels may anchor in Salaya Harbour in a depth of approx 14.6m either in the outer anchorage 0.75nm NNW of Nora Rock or if with local knowledge, in the inner anchorage, 2nm S of Kalubhar Tapu Light tower in approx the same depth. Small vessels with local knowledge can anchor in a depth of approx 7.3m, 3.5nm SE of the light tower.

The port limits are defined as follows: ..... North: North limit is an 18.29m contour of soundings. It extends in the E up to the point of intersection of a line drawn from the SE boundary stones of Salaya Salt Works and in the W, up to the intersection point of the western limit as defined hereafter. East: Eastern limit runs along the E boundary of the salt works up to the 18.29m contour line in the N and from the NE boundary corner of the salt works. It runs along the southern boundary of the salt works up to the SW boundary corner from where the line runs further due W across the road (leading to Sykes Point Jetty) up to limits stones marked SP/LP and further extending up to stone SP/LP in a curved line and then due S up to stone SP/L3 located near Salaya village NE corner. South: The S limit starting from stone SP/L3 running westerly and joining the stone SP/L4 near the village gate then further joined to the W up to stone SP/L5 located near the NW corner of the village and then further W up to a point 0.5nm from the Salaya Dock Estate Railway track. West: Western limit runs due N from the western point of the S limit described above and going due N up to the 18.29m contour.

Kalubhar Tapu Light (22°26.0'N 069°35.0'E) is exhibited from a circular stone tower at the W end of Kalubhar Tapu. Two leading beacons (white stone), 4.0m in height, stand 0.5nm apart approx 2.75nm W of Kalubhar Tapu Light tower; in line they bear 302°. A similar pair of leading beacons in line bearing 164° stands 2.25nm SW of the light tower. For a deep draught vessel: If approaching from NW, after passing Chank Tapu Light tower (22°33.0'N 069°24.0'E), steer for Kalubhar Tapu Light tower bearing 128°. Maintain this course until the SE beacon of the N pair of stone beacons on the W side of the entrance to Salaya Harbour bears 152° and steer for it on that bearing which will lead over the bar. When Kalubhar Tapu Light tower bears 114° steer for it on that bearing and pass between Taylor Shoal, 3.25nm WNW of Kalubhar Tapu Light tower and Hands Shoals, 3.25nm to the S. When the N beacon of the S pair of white stone leading beacons bears 158° keep it so; this leads to the outer anchorage. Do not proceed S of Nora Rock without local knowledge. For a vessel of shallow draught: After passing between Taylor and Hands Shoals, as directed above, keep Kalubhar Tapu Light tower bearing 114° until the S pair of white stone leading beacons are in line bearing 164°; keep them so until the N pair of leading beacons is in line astern bearing 302° which, so kept astern, leads to the inner anchorage.

Up to three vessels may work at the anchorage at any one time.

Range 2.74m. Tidal streams: Tidal streams from 2-3nm off the entrance to Salaya Harbour are E going with the flood and W going with the ebb; they attain a rate of 1kt at neaps.

Tugs are provided from Bedi Bunder.

There is no coastal radio station in the port. Messages should be sent via Bahrain or Singapore Radio. VHF: Ch 16.

Customs allowances: One bottle of liquor and one carton of cigarettes is allowed for each crew member per week. Immigration: Immigration officials will check passports/CDC (Seaman's Books) and issue shore permits. Nationals from Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh and China (mainland) will not be issued with landing permits.

To be tendered as per terms and conditions of Charter Party. Generally, NOR tendered by master on vessel's arrival advising that vessel is ready to load/discharge the nominated cargo.
