Pondicherry (INPNY)

The port consists of a roadstead where cargo is handled via barges at the anchorage, in fair weather. The new port will accommodate small vessels and barges up to 3.0m draught. The port handles liquid bulk cargoes, like molasses and styrene monomer, and bagged cargo like cement and food grain.

Pondicherry (or Puducherry) is situated on the SE coast between Cuddalore and Chennai in the district of South Arcot in Tamilnadu State.

Max draught 3.0m. Anchorage: Max size handled 30,972DWT.

The usual anchorage is in depths of 9.0-11.0m, approx 0.7nm from the coast of Pondicherry; but from Oct-Dec, when bad weather may be expected, it is advisable to anchor approx 1nm further out in depths of 13.0-15.0m; a long scope of cable is recommended and precautions against bad weather should always be taken. The holding ground is not very good.

North: A line drawn due E from the boundary pillar positioned on the coast 0.8nm N from the centre of Pondicherry new pier. South: A line drawn due E from the boundary pillar positioned on the coast line, 1.6nm S from the centre of the Pondicherry new pier. East: A line drawn from the E extremities of N and S limits. West: A line drawn from the N boundary pillar to the S boundary pillar, distance approx 2.5nm, parallel to the shore, 45.72m above HW level at spring tide, except that in respect of the stretch of foreshore covered by the points: 147m N and 107m S from the centre of the new pier the line shall recede to 229m above HW level at spring tide.

Pondicherry Light (11°54.9'N 079°49.9'E) is exhibited, and a radio beacon transmits, from a white six sided tower with a black band. An iron pier in ruins projects approx 370m from a point 1nm NNE of the light. A conspicuous TV tower stands 0.35nm WSW of the port flagstaff.

Customs allowances: One bottle of liquor and one carton of cigarettes is allowed for each crew member per week. Immigration: Immigration officials will check passports/CDC (Seaman's Books) and issue shore permits. Nationals from Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh and China (mainland) will not be issued with landing permits.

Local port health officer grants pratique after boarding vessel.

To be tendered as per terms and conditions of Charter Party. Generally, NOR tendered by master on vessel's arrival advising that vessel is ready to load/discharge the nominated cargo.
