Belekeri (INBLK)

Belekeri is an open, fair weather, roadstead port from which iron ore is shipped in substantial quantities. Shipping operations are however suspended during the SW monsoon. This port has been closed by the Forest Department due to alleged illegal export of iron ore minerals (06/13). It was reported in March 2016 that the port of Belekeri will be developed into a major port.

Belekeri is situated on the W coast of northern Karnataka, approx 120nm SSE of Bombay.

Anchorage: Approx max draught 9.6m.

Belekeri Roads lie between Kusuldiva Gudda (14°38.0'N 074°16.0'E) and Kwada Point, 6.5nm NW, vessels at anchor load iron ore from lighters in the N part of the roads. Anchorage for medium draught vessels may be obtained with Kukra Island Light bearing 080° distant 2.5nm in depths of 11.0m, mud; shallower draught vessels can anchor with the light bearing 055° distant 2nm in depths of 10.0m, mud, as shown on the chart. Caution: It has been reported that depths within the 5.0m depth contour may be shallower than charted. A dangerous wreck, marked close SE by a lightbuoy (port hand), lies 1.6nm WSW of the island.

Kukra Light is exhibited, from Sep-May, from a white tower with black bands from the S part of Kukra Islet.

There is no coastal radio station in the port. Messages should be sent via Bahrain or Singapore Radio. VHF: Via Mangalore Coastal Radio Station (callsign "VWL").

Customs allowances: One bottle of liquor and one carton of cigarettes are allowed for each crew member per week. Immigration: Immigration officials will check passports/CDC (Seaman's Books) and issue shore permits. Nationals from Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh and China (mainland) will not be issued with landing permits.

ETA messages are to be given by master/owners to charterers/shippers or consignees 7, 5, 3, 2 and 1 day prior to arrival or as per Charter Party. .

Local port health officer grants pratique after boarding vessel.

To be tendered as per terms and conditions of Charter Party. Generally, NOR tendered by master on vessel's arrival advising that vessel is ready to load/discharge the nominated cargo.
