Killala (IEKLA)

The port is currently closed for commercial operations. Information for the port is retained should the port reopen. The last large commercial vessel to enter the port was reportedly in 1973. The port area is prone to silting and is therefore only used by fishing vessels and yachts. At LW, there is a sand berth.

Killala is situated on the W coast of Ireland, approx 19nm W of Sligo.

LOA 91m, draught 3.66m.

Bartragh Pool (0.5nm NE of the quay) safe anchorage in depths up to 7.6m.

The following navigational information cannot be relied upon as the area silts badly. Mariners are advised to refer to the appropriate official nautical publications. There are lights and buoys to aid navigation. Channel: In the channel over Killala bar a least depth of 0.3m should always be assumed. From the bar a narrow and shallow channel leads for a distance of approx 1.5nm to the quay at Killala. It is divided into four legs each indicated by a pair of leading lights or beacons, the final leg also being marked by perches on each side. Note: By day a slightly better depth can be obtained over the bar by keeping the left hand edge of the front light in line with the right hand edge of the rear light. When 0.5nm from the front light, the alignment (215°) of leading beacons (square concrete towers) situated on Inch Island (54°13.3'N 009°12.3'W) leads for a short distance clear of the Ross shore. At night, the white sector (213-217°) of a light exhibited from the rear beacon covers the leading line.
