Fenit (IEFEN)

The port which has good cargo handling facilities is the only commercial port on the SW coast of Ireland. The chief exports are Liebherr cranes.

Fenit is an expanding small port, well protected and situated in the SE corner of Tralee Bay on the W coast of Ireland.

Draught 6.5m. LOA 122m (up to 150m with tug).

The port handles approx 20 vessels annually and exports approx 10,000t annually.

Anchorage is available 1nm W of Little Samphire Lighthouse.

Access possible at all times, with a min depth of 5.0m at MLWS in approach channel. Entrance channel: Having crossed the bar and passed S of Little Samphire Island the fairway to Fenit Harbour, which is approx 0.1nm in width, passes close S of Samphire Island and the pier. It is bounded S by extensive shallow banks extending from the S shore of Tralee Bay. Beyond this, depths of 0.6-0.9m may be carried for approx 2nm over the flats which entirely occupy the inner portion of the bay. Directions: Having passed S of Little Samphire Island the channel to Fenit Harbour continues E, passing (with positions relative to Samphire Island Light): S of Wheel Rock (0.15nm W) which dries and was reported to be marked by a perch, then: S of Samphire Island, then: As required to berth alongside the pier or to anchor in the channel.

Not compulsory, but recommended. Two pilots available. Request pilot at least 24 hours in advance through Valentia, callsign "EJK". Pilot boards near The Seven Hogs (in bad weather W of Samphire Island).

Fenit Harbour comprises the shallow water enclosed, on the W by a causeway, 520m in length, extending S from the mainland to Samphire Island, a conical rock on which stands a light, and on the S by Fenit Pier extending 250m ENE from the island.

Only draught. Berthing normally recommended during 2 hours on either side of HW.

Range 4.87m.

Only necessary if LOA exceeds 125m. Available from Foynes port.

Prevailing winds: SW'ly. The harbour is protected from W and though exposed N and NE, the holding ground is good.
