Muntok (IDMUO)

The port is currently closed for commercial operations. Information for the port is retained should the port reopen. Muntok is a commercial port open to international trade. The port consists of two breakwaters, S and W, with an entrance channel 550m in length, 60m wide, depth 1.0m LWS.

Muntok is situated at the mouth of Sungai Muntok, 2nm ENE of Tanjung Kelian.

Approx 20,000t of cargo handled annually.

Anchorage for large vessels, with good holding ground, may be obtained in depths of 10.0-22.0m, soft mud, from 1-1.75nm offshore, with the summit of Bukit Menumbing bearing 012°, and Tanjung Kelian bearing between 282° and 293°. Small vessels can obtain anchorage from 0.5 to 0.6nm S of the wooden light structure at Muntok, in a depth of 7.0m. When approaching this anchorage it must be borne in mind that a detached shoal 1.75nm in length, with a least depth of 2.7m over it, extends from a position 0.3nm E of Tanjung Kelian to a position 1nm S of the light structure at Muntok and 2nm E of Tanjung Kelian. Vessels are cautioned not to anchor within an area of 0.5nm radius situated with its centre 2.25nm SE of Muntok Light structure. There are numerous mooring buoys within this arc. This roadstead is used by oil tankers which, due to their draught, cannot cross the bar at Air Musi with a full load when coming from Palembang. Such vessels secure to head and stern buoys, and complete to full load from another tanker.

When bound for Muntok from E, vessels can use the clear channel N of Karang Brombrom, Gosong Amelia, and Gosong Muntok. If passing S and W of Karang Brombrom and E of Gosong Amelia, the summit of Gunung Belo bearing 355° leads 1nm clear of Karang Brombrom.Muntok can be approached from S by steering for the summit of Bukit Menumbing in line with the flagstaff on the fort at Muntok, bearing 019°. This leads over Gosong Muntok in a depth of 10.1m, and depths increase rapidly to 38m, soft mud, when inside the bank.Oil tankers from Palembang can approach the head and stern moorings by steering for the summit of Gunung Belo bearing 051.5° which leads across Gosong Muntok in a least depth of 10.1m. Vessels from N, bound for Muntok, can use the channel between Karang Hadji and Tanjung Kelian. Owing to the great depths and bad holding ground, anchorage is not possible in this channel.

A light is exhibited from a wooden structure, 4m in height, situated on the foreshore, 200m W of the mouth of Sungai Muntok.

Tide: Diurnal. Current: Flood water flows to the E and ebb water flows to the W with a velocity of approx 2-3kts.

Seven tugboats owned by PT Tomah available.

Prevailing winds: W and SE'ly. Temperature: Varies from 25-32°C.

Radio: It is recommended to use Jakarta Radio for passing messages at long range, callsign "PKX". Working hours are 0000-0400hrs UTC on 8542kHz and 0000-1200hrs UTC on 8752kHz. Inmarsat communication is possible.

Immigration: All crew members must have a valid travel document. Crews from communist countries are not allowed to disembark whilst in port.

Should be advised to agent at 10, 3, 2 and 1 day prior to arrival. In addition to date and time of arrival the Master should also advise the estimated draught on arrival.

Free pratique is granted on arrival. Ship Sanitation Control Certificate (SSCC) and Ship Sanitation Control Exemption Certificate (SSCEC) can be renewed at the major ports.
