Linden (GYLDN)

Linden, located along the Demerara River, services the local bauxite mine.

Linden is situated on the Demerara River approx 50nm S of Georgetown, Guyana.

Max LOA 145.63m, beam 21.20m, draught 7.1m and 22,000DWT.

06°57'N., 058°03.3'W, marks the seaward end and centreline position of the Demerara main ship channel with a bottom width of 70m. Guyana Mining Enterprises berth is approx 60nm up the Demerara River on the E bank. The vessel has to transit under the Demerara Harbour bridge to and from Linden.

Pilotage is compulsory for vessel's entering and leaving the harbours of Georgetown. All requests for pilots, whether made through the radio station direct from ship or via agent should be accompanied by draught particulars of the ship. Pilot boards vessel in the vicinity of Demerara Light.

Clonbrook Light is shown (6°44'N., 57°57'W.) approx 14.8nm ESE of the mouth of the Demerara River. A beacon lies 0.5nm SE of the aforementioned light. Radio mast located 11.3nm SE of the aforementioned light.

Mariners must be aware that the draft may be dependant on depths across the bar by Georgetown. This may also be affected across shoals in sections of the Demerara River. As a result, vessels can be loaded approx 0.3m in excess of the least depth on the bar at Georgetown. In this case, vessels must anchor 24nm upriver from Georgetown by Sand Hills and must await the following tide. Throughout certain sections of the Demerara River, two vessels are not able to transverse around certain bends simultaneously.

Tidal range at Linden is 0.3m less than at Georgetown at springs and then less at neaps.

Under regulations, there is a max speed of 10kts along the Demerara River.

Vessels should amend ETA as required by special message through coast radio station to their agents. Vessels may have to lighten at Georgetown before proceeding to Linden in the event that their draught does not meet that needed for transiting the Demerara River.
