Vathi (GRVTH)

Vathi is a capital of the island of Ithaca. The port is a small harbour which lies at the head of Limin Vathi. It provides limited berthing facilities. Strong W and NW squalls occur quite frequently during the winter.

Vathi is located on the N coast of the island of Samos in the Dodecanese group of islands.

Limin Vathi provides a good holding in mud in the following positions, but vessels are advised to be prepared for strong SW to NW squalls: W of Nisis Loimokathartirion in depths of 11.0m which in places lies within 23m of the shore. When using this berth vessels should secure stern-to the shore with stern-fasts to ring bolts provided. This berth is recommended as affording the best shelter from squalls. NE of Nisis Loimokathartirion, in 24-27m. E of Nisis Loimokathartirion in 20m but noting that this berth provides little swinging room between coastal banks which extend from both sides of the basin. At the head of the harbour in 5.0-7.0m, suitable for coasters.

Directions: From a position approx 0.3nm SW of Akra Ayiou Andreou (Andrea Point) (0.75nm SW of Adra Skhoinos) on which is exhibited a light (white round hut, elevation 24m) the track into Limin Vathi leads SE, passing (positioned from Akra Ayiou Andreou): SW of Akra Kolonia (Kephalo Head) (0.3nm S), then NE of Vrakhonisis Skartsoumbonisi (Katzurbo-nisi) (0.5nm SSW) which stands in the approaches to Ormiskos Dhexia (Dexia Bay). A light (metal column on pedestal, green band, elevation 9.0m) is exhibited from the N end of the islet. Then NE of Akra Dhexia (Prytano Point) (0.65nm S), above which stands an ancient fort. Then a mid-channel track should be maintained into Limin Vathi, passing NE of Nisis Loimokathartirion, situated near the edge of a shallow bank which extends approx 0.125nm N from the SW shore of the harbour. A light (column on pedestal, green band, elevation 8m) is exhibited from the N extremity of the island.

Olympia Radio ("SVA") receives distress or urgent messages and public communication (working channel). Watch frequencies VHF/FM, 2182kHz and HF/DSC as follows: MF 2187.5kHz. HF 4207.5kHz, 6312kHz, 8414.5kHz, 12577kHz, 16804.5kHz. Heraklio, Limnos and Corfu Radio for general watch calling frequencies. The stations work throughout 24 hours. Inmarsat communication is possible. VHF: Ch 16.

Customs allowances: Each officer and crew member is allowed 1 bottle of spirits and 1 carton of cigarettes each. Immigration: Immigration authorities issue crew passes. For EU nationals there are no Immigration procedures. There are special regulations for nationals of countries such as Russia, Poland, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Serbia, Montenegro, Slovakia and South American countries. Crew being repatriated to non European countries must have a ticket which the agent must show to the authorities, agent's guarantees are requested by various authorities.

Customs authorities (two copies of each): 1. Ship's Stores List Declaration 2. Officer's and Crew's Personal Effects Declaration 3. Master's Declaration that all electrical items, not sealed, and other goods will remain onboard. 4. Master's Declaration for bunkers and cargo onboard. Special forms exist for all documents but apply only to liner vessels. These are delivered onboard on arrival.

Initial ETA to be sent to vessel's agent on departure from last port. Additional ETA's to be sent 48, 24 and 12 hours prior to arrival to the vessel's agent. One hour prior to arrival, port authorities, pilot and agents should be contacted by VHF giving exact time of arrival. The ETA message should include: Ship's particulars, cargo information, dangerous cargo (if any onboard, with details), health condition and stowaway details (if any).

Pratique should be applied for on arrival and cannot be applied for by radio.

Can be tendered anytime but will only be accepted between 0800-1700hrs.
