Chalkis is situated on Euboea Island on the E side of the Greek mainland and can be approached from the N or S.

Max LOA 138.5m, beam 16.8m, draught 6.4m, 6,830DWT.

Waiting anchorage: Vessels awaiting a pilot may anchor from 0.5nm to 1nm S of Akra Bourtzi (38° 24.5'N 023°38.4'E). Owing to the strength of the tidal streams it is advisable to anchor before entering the narrows, and not to commence the approach until the bridge is open. Northbound: A good place to anchor is about 0.3nm SSW of the bridge in a depth of 11.0m. This berth is out of the strength of the tidal stream. Southbound: Vessels awaiting a pilot should anchor off Akra Kakokefali (38° 28.7'N 023°36.3'E), keeping clear of the axis (022°-202°) of the approach to Parthmos Evripou. Crew of pilot boat arrange for mooring/unmooring of vessels calling at Chalkis and in the event of an emergency there are private mooring men to assist vessels. Berthing / unberthing can be carried out only when the direction of the tide is from S to N.

Pilots are compulsory for all foreign vessels and Greek vessels over 1,000GT. There is a pilot station at the Port Authority office. Listening on VHF Ch 12 throughout 24 hours. There are 3 pilots available for the port. Pilot boarding places: Northbound vessels: 38°24.04'N 023°38.35'E. Southbound vessels: 1nm N of harbour entrance lightbuoys. The pilot boat is black with a white band.

The Chalkis port limits cover all waters of N and S Evoikos Gulf and the E coast of Euboea Island.

Draughts are restricted to 5.5m during night and 6.5m during the day. Restrictions for vessels using Evripos Channel bridge: ..... 1. Max LOA 105m, beam 20m 2. Max draught 5.5m 3. Passage only when tides are slack or stopped 4. Passage only with good weather conditions 5. Bridge only opens once at night and between 2200hrs and 05000hrs when tides are available. 6. Every first Fri, the bridge does not open due to servicing of bridge equipment. (For exact date vessel must contact Port Authority, Tel: +30 221 28888 or contact VHF Ch 12). 7. Pilots are compulsory for all foreign vessels and for Greek ships over 500GT. The bridge is opened on request between 2200-0500hrs and closed for maintenance for the whole of the first Friday of each month. The opening cycle takes about 15 minutes. The bridge is opened when two or more vessels are waiting to pass, in exceptional circumstances the bridge may be opened by day for a single large vessel, or for a single small vessel if carrying perishable goods. In the event of bad weather or strong winds the bridge will not be opened.

Compulsory for vessels over 1,000GT approaching/leaving berth. It is also compulsory for vessels over LOA 120m to be accompanied by a tug from the S waiting anchorage to Notios Limin. Tug operations are under the tug owners control and orders must be placed at least 3 hours before the service is required between 0800hrs and 1600hrs. Listening on VHF Ch 12 and 6 throughout 24 hours. Application for services on Sat and Sun must be made on Fri prior to 1600hrs and on Sat between 0900hrs and 1400hrs. Olympia Radio ("SVA") receives distress or urgent messages and public communication (working channel). Watch frequencies VHF/FM, 2182kHz and HF/DSC as follows: MF 2187.5kHz. HF 4207.5kHz, 6312kHz, 8414.5kHz, 12577kHz, 16804.5kHz. Heraklio, Limnos and Corfu Radio for general watch calling frequencies. The stations work throughout 24 hours. Customs allowances: Customs Service acts on behalf of the Ministry of Economics. Each officer and crew member is allowed 1 bottle of spirits and 1 carton of cigarettes each. All remaining cigarettes and spirits will be kept under Customs seal in the bonded store room. The penalty for non-compliance is the forfeiture of the goods. Harbour Office will provide Master with port guide lines on arrival.

Pratique should be applied for on arrival and cannot be applied for by radio. Chalkis Port Authority acts on behalf of the Health Centre completing International Maritime Declarations of Health on a vessel's arrival for the crew of incoming vessels. If a vessel arrives from a country with a declared disease, agents must inform the Health Centre in order to arrange for the necessary procedures on vessel's arrival. NOR is usually tendered in accordance with the terms of the Charter Party of each vessel. NOR can be tendered anytime but will only be accepted between 0800-1700hrs.
