Qasigiannguit, also known as Christianshab, is situated 5nm NNE of Nuuk, at the head of a SW facing inlet which indents the W coast of Kangilinaq.

Contact port officials for permission to anchor. Anchorage Lights (aligned 275°, shown May-Dec) are established on the SE end of Spaekholmen. Front light (mast, 4.0m in height, 68°48.9'N 051°12.7'W). Rear light (mast, 4.0m in height, 68°48.9'N 051°12.7'W, 53m W). Good anchorage can be obtained in the inner harbour at the intersection of the alignment of the anchorage lights (275°) and Leading Light (038.5°) in depths of 13.0m, sand and clay bottom.

Approach: The harbour may be approached at any time during the navigation season. Larger vessels should not attempt to enter the harbour during strong E winds. Caution: The depths in the channel exceed 100m and extend close to the islet in the NE chain. Nuk, (68°44.5'N 051°19.0'W) is the SW extremity of the peninsula on which Christianshaab is situated. Direction: Between Napissaq and Spaekholmen, two entry channels separated by a small islet lead to the outer harbour. The N channel, 200m wide, has a least charted depth of 21.0m. The S channel, 400m wide, has a least charted depth of 20.0m, There is a third entry channel close SW of the Napissaq. It is approx 400m wide, with depths in excess of 50m. At night, white sectors (118° to 156° and 45° to 58°) of Napisaaq Light lead N and S, respectively, of Savik Island towards the channel. Dangers off the coast N of Christianshaab and the mainland, SW of the settlement, are covered by red sectors of Napisaaq Light. A white sector light (247° to 275°) of Napisaaq Light leads from Christianshaab harbour into the channel N of Napisaaq.

Savik Light: (orange and red tower, 5.0m in height, shown May-Dec, 68°49.3'N 051°18.8'W) stands on the NW end of the Savik located 1.8nm W of Christianshaab. A beacon tower (topmark red ball), which stands on the summit of Savik at an elavation of 83m is the most prominent landmark in the approach to Christianshaab.

Ice: Much ice can be encountered off Qasigiannguit, when it breaks up in Disko Bugt in early summer, but normally does not lie so close inshore that the coast cannot be navigated with care. At Qasigiannguit, icebergs and glacier ice rarely obstruct navigation as the outer harbour is large and at least one of the entry channels is likely to be clear.

Range 2.8m springs, 1.6m neaps. Tidal streams are weak within the harbour.

Prevailing winds: SE'ly. Strong E'ly winds can blow in the harbour with violent gust from the mountains ENE of the harbour. It becomes unsafe at this point, even for larger vessels with two anchors down. Fog is common at the time of the winter ice break up in early summer.
