St Mary's (Scilly Islands) (GBSVZ)

The port is currently closed for commercial operations. Information for the port is retained should the port reopen. The quay and harbour is the centre for all commercial and recreational vessels operating between the mainland and the other islands. The facilities available consist of one pier with a depth alongside of 7.6m. This pier can accommodate small coastal vessels.

St Mary's is located on the Isles of Scilly off the SW coast of England.

Anchorage may be obtained 0.1nm N of Rat Island pier head, with the Rear leading beacon on Mount Flagon bearing 106°, in a depth of approx 5.0m. This anchorage is exposed to W winds.

Saint Mary's Harbour is approached from Saint Mary's Road through Saint Mary's Pool, a bay which is entered between Rat Island (49°55'N 006°19'W), artificially connected with the land S, and Taylor's Island; Newford Island, lies close to the E shore of the bay, midway between rocky ledges extend W from all 3 islands. The Cow, a drying rock, lies 0.15nm W of Taylor's Island with The Calf nearly midway between, together forming the dangers in the approach to Saint Mary's Pool; Bacon Ledge, with a least depth of 0.3m, 0.15nm SW of The Cow, with Pool Ledge extending SW lie across the entrance. The Ridge, with a least depth of 5.5m, lies at the outer end of a bank which extends 0.15nm NW from Bacon Ledge. There are 3 passages leading to Saint Mary's Pool: The S passage, which is the best, is marked by leading lights situated on Mount Flagon, close to the E shore of Saint Mary's Pool. The front light (white beacon triangle topmark) lies near the base of the W slope and the rear light (white beacon X topmark) is situated on the summit. The lights in line lead between Pool Ledge and the shoals extending from Rat Island. The middle passage lies between Bacon Ledge and The Cow, with heavy swell from W the sea sometimes breaks across the channel. The N passage, between The Cow and The Calf, should only be taken in fine weather by vessels with local knowledge. Directions: To enter by the S passage steer 097° on the alignment of the Mount Flagon leading beacons. To enter by the middle passage steer with the tower on Buzza Hill, 0.35nm SSW of Mount Flagon, in line with a shelter with white stripes painted on each end and in the centre of its roof, standing on the quay, bearing 151°.

Yachts under 20m The Compulsory Pilotage area is defined as being anywhere within a distance of 6nm from the S point of Samson (49°56'N 006°21'W). ETA should be sent to the Harbour Master at least 24 hours in advance of arrival at the outer limits of the compulsory pilotage area. There are no regular pilot vessels in the Isles of Scilly, but on approaching, a vessel requiring a pilot should make the usual signal. A vessel should embark the pilot from 1-2nm S of Peninnis Head, or the same distance W of Bishop Rock.

The harbour limits extend ENE from Newman (Rat Island) (49°55'N 006°19'W) to Newford Island, 0.4nm ENE.
