Strangford (GBSJL)

There is a ferry service operating a regular service from Strangford and Portaferry. The port is closed for commercial operations. Information for the port is retained should the port reopen.

Strangford is located on the W side of Strangford Narrows at the entrance to Strangford Lough.

Max draught 3.0m. Largest vessel handled: Approx 500DWT.

Outer anchorage: There is no anchorage outside Swan Islet but vessels can anchor at Cross Roads (1.5nm SSE) or in Audley's Roads (0.7nm NW). A secure anchorage, out of the main tidal stream in Strangford Narrows, can be found inside Swan Islet, in depths from 3.0-7.0m.

The alignment 256° of Strangford E of leading lights: Front light (orange mast, elevation 6m) standing near the head of the ferry terminal (54°22.3'N 005°33.2'W): Rear light (orange mast, elevation 10m) standing 46m from the front light, leads to the terminal passing (with positions given in metres from front leading light): S of the light (200m NE) marking the edge of the shoal which extends 60m NE from Swan Islet, then: N of a light beacon (110m E) which marks drying rocks extending from Watch House Quay, then: Over a depth of 3.0-4.0m (85m, ENE), then: S of the light on S Pladdy (100m NNE) which dries.

Optional but advisable. Vessels should request pilots on VHF Ch 16, on arrival at bar. Pilot boards approx 1.3nm S of Ballyquintin Point, close E of the leading line.

Range 4.3m. Tidal streams inside Swan Islet run in a NE going direction except for a 2 hour period, 1 hour either side of HW, when it runs S. Care is necessary when berthing at the head of New Quay as the tidal stream runs diagonally across it.
