Newport on the River Usk is reached from the Bristol Channel. The area has the second highest tidal range in the world. The main port, docks operated by ABP, is accessed by shipping via South Lock. Additional to the main port facilities, there are several privately owned River Usk commercial berths including Dallimore's Wharf, Lysaghts and Eastern Dry Dock (now flooded) and MIR Steel Wharf, which has NAABSA status (Not Always Afloat but Safe Aground). Additional to these private berthx there is Bird Port, an all weather covered berth in a converted drydock (see separate entry). ABP South Wales and Newport Harbour Authorities are not responsible for monitoring or maintaining siltation levels at these private berths and Wharfs. The Newport Harbour Commissioners are responsible for the safety of navigation on the River Usk. Principal cargoes handled are timber, steel, aluminium, forest products, fruit, vegetables, motor vehicles, cement, scrap, animal feedstuff, coal, iron ore, general cargo and a renewable energy hub.
