✓ ISPS✓ ECA
The "Medway Ports" refer to a number of port facilities located on the River Medway in SE England close to the Thames Estuary. The list of ports include Sheerness (see separate entry), Isle of Grain (including Thamesport), Chatham Docks, Ridham Dock, Otterham, Rochester, Queenborough, Oakham Ness and Kingsnorth Power Station. Since privatisation, the port of Sheerness has been assigned the Competent Harbour Authority for navigation. Responsibility for land based operations remains with the individual port and terminal operators. A diverse range of cargoes are handles, including fresh produce, new vehicles, forest products, steel and containers. A two berth LNG terminal is situated on the Isle of Grain.

Restricted Area: An area in which passage is restricted is centred on the cargo transfer arms and has a radius of 250m. When a LNG vessel is berthed at the terminal, no vessel over LOA 50m may enter the restricted area. Vessels of less than LOA 50m may, if it is deemed necessary for safe navigation by the pilot or Master of such vessel, pass inside the restricted area provided that a distance of at least 100m is maintained from the LNG vessel on the berth. In all cases, passing vessels must not exceed a speed of 7.5kts through the water. Traffic regulations: When a LNG vessel is inbound or outbound between Medway Buoy (51°28.8'N 000°52.8'E) and the Isle of Grain LNG terminal, the following regulations apply: No vessel may proceed in the opposite direction to a LNG vessel if the latter is in the Medway Approach Channel between No 2 Lightbuoy (51°28.3'N 000° 50.5'E) and a line drawn W from the lights (2 fixed red (vert)) (51°26.8'N 000° 44.6'E) at Garrison Point.Vessels proceeding in the same direction as the LNG vessel must maintain a distance of at least 1nm ahead or 0.5nm astern. Vessels shall not cross less than 1nm ahead or 0.5nm astern of the LNG vessel. Vessels of less than LOA 50m may navigate in the same or opposite direction to the LNG provided that they can navigate safely outside the main channel. Vessels of more than LOA 50m when inbound shall not pass upriver of Kent Buoys (51°26.1'N 000°43.5'E), nor, when outbound shall they pass downriver of No 12 Lightbuoy (51°25.7'N 000°43.5'E), if a LNG vessel is manoeuvring in Saltpan Reach W of the Kent Buoys. They may only continue passage after being advised by Medway Navigation Service that it is safe to proceed. VESSELS CARRYING DANGEROUS SUBSTANCES IN PLA WATERS: All vessels carrying cargo containing dangerous substances must comply with the Dangerous Substances in Harbour Areas Regulations 1987 and inform the Port of London Authority, whose waters the vessels will have to transit.
