π Port Overview
β ISPSβ ECAEcoPort
The port is divided into two sections, the Eastern Docks and Western Docks. The Eastern Docks comprise a car ferry terminal with eight Ro-Ro berths and three deep water general cargo berths. The Western Docks comprise two dedicated cruise terminals. The port is synonymous with cross channel traffic and is the busiest international drive-on, drive-off terminal in the world. Ferries flow out of the port entrances on average every 20 minutes (DFDS Seaways, P&O Feries and MyFerry Link) destined for, and returning from, three other major European ports. Dover is also Britain's premier S coast port for fresh produce and can handle a wide range of cargoes from a terminal at Eastern Docks. It is also one of Northern Europe's busiest cruise ports for turn round calls and is also a popular port of call for cruise vessels. The port is benefitting from a number of infrastructure improvements, including a more efficient road system with better signage and larger holding areas for vehicles at times of peak ferry traffic use.

General notices & regulations
..... Regulations concerning entry: 1. Traffic Signals: a. When the vessel is underway within 400 yards of the Eastern or Western Entrance to the harbour or is underway within the harbour, the Master of a vessel shall obey the traffic control signals set out as and when displayed from time to time at the Eastern or Western Entrance to the harbour or at the various positions within the harbour. b. No vessel may enter or leave the harbour or docks without permission. No person shall take or attempt to take any vessel into or out of the harbour or docks without the permission of, or in disobedience to the directions of the Harbour Master by the traffic control signals or succession appointed by the Harbour Master, having regard to other vessels about to enter or leave the harbour or docks. c. No vessels are to enter or manoeuvre within the restricted area enclosing Eastern Docks, without the specific permission of Dover Port Control. 2. Anchoring: a. The Master of a vessel shall not anchor the vessel in the approaches to the Eastern or Western Entrance to the harbour in such a position as to obstruct the free passage of any other vessel through either of these entrances. b. The Master of a vessel shall not anchor the vessel in the Fairway, outside a line formed by the S end of the Eastern Arm and the S end of the Prince of Wales Pier without the permission of the Harbour Master. c. The Master and the crew of a vessel in the Harbour shall moor, anchor, place, load, unload or move such vessel in accordance with the directions of the Harbour Master. When any such vessel has been moored, anchored or placed in any berth or place, no person shall move or attempt to move or cause the vessel to be moved from there without the permission, except in case of emergency, or contrary to the directions of the Harbour Master. 3. General Port Closure: Wind directions from SSW to WSW. a. The port shall close to all shipping movements when the sustained wind speed within the harbour exceeds 55kts from these directions, which is violent storm, force 11. Prior to such a general port closure all scheduled operators, agents and the Masters of vessels immediately affected shall be consulted and an assessment made in conjunction with them which shall take full account of the prevailing circumstances. b. Eastern Arm and South Jetty berth are particularly susceptible to the effects of strong winds from a SSW to WSW direction and the accompanying sea swell. Once the wind speed attains a sustained 45kts, damage to the fendering, the vessel and quayside is likely to occur. It is recommended that when a force 9, strong gale or more is forecast these berths should be vacated prior to the onset of winds of this strength. 4. Reduced Visibility: When visibility reduces to less than 500m movements within the harbour should not be undertaken unless the vessel is equipped with suitable radars capable of assisting with the manoeuvre and has sufficient trained officers to operate such equipment. 5. Masters and pilots are advised that during the times of the Western Entrance jet streams, that is a period approx 2 hours 40 minutes to 1 hour 10 minutes before High Water, a passage, inwards or outwards, through this area should not be undertaken on vessels with an LOA in excess of 125m, unless there are particular compelling reasons to do so. Regulations concerning departure: 1. Any intended manoeuvre shall be agreed by the Master, pilot and Port Control having due regard to the vessel's capabilities, the prevailing weather conditions, the height of tide and other port traffic. 2. Departure for vessels berthed at the Eastern Docks is normally through the Eastern Entrance. 3. Departure for vessels berthed at the Western Docks is normally through the Western Entrance. Eastern Docks: 4. The standard departure from any of the berths within the Eastern Docks is for the vessel to manoeuvre off the berth into the Outer Harbour, then letting go any tugs before making headway to the Eastern Entrance and proceeding outwards. Western Docks: 5. Vessel berthed starboard side to the berth, it is possible to either turn off the berth or proceed astern through the Western Entrance. This manoeuvre will be dependent on the vessel type, tug availability, height of tide and prevailing weather.
