Burghead (GBBUH)

Burghead is only fishing and recreational with no commercial cargo.

North Atlantic Winter Seasonal Zone II, Winter Nov 1 to Mar 31, Summer Apr 1 to Oct 31.

Burghead is situated in NE Scotland at the S entrance to the Moray Firth.

LOA 58m, draught 3.5m.

A recommended anchorage is 1nm W of the breakwater head, in a depth of approx 11.0m, sand. A submarine outfall pipe over which depths may be approx 2.5 less than charted extends 0.55nm NW from the extremity of Burghead.

Directions for entering harbour: The promontory of Burghead is fringed on the N and W sides by drying rock ledges, and on the SW side by drying sands. The outer approach to the harbour leads over a shallow coastal bank with depths over it of less than 5.0m, which in this vicinity extends approx 0.2nm W of the head of North Pier. Then the immediate approach to the harbour entrance passes: WNW of a beacon (special) on outer extremity of a groyne extending 115m SSW from near the head of South Pier: Then, close E of a short concrete piled jetty which projects S from the head of North Pier; a light (concrete and steel structure, 3m in height) stands on the head of the jetty. A light (concrete tower, 6m in height) stands on the head of North Pier. The E side of the harbour entrance is marked by a light (wooden structure, 3m in height) on the head of South Pier.

Auxiliary watch is kept and rescue apparatus is maintained at Burghead.

Pilotage is compulsory for vessels over 40GT. Licensed pilots are available locally. The pilot boards 1nm W of the harbour entrance. Vessels should arrive 2 hours before to 1 hour after HW.

Commencing at a point (57°42.0'N 003°29.3'W) on the level of high water opposite the S end of Park Street in Burghead; then in a straight line in a W'ly direction for a distance of 1,052m to a point (57°42.0'N 003°30.3'W); then in a straight line in a N'ly direction for a distance of 638m to a point (57°42.3'N 003°30.3'W); then in a straight line in an E'ly direction for a distance of 577m to a point (57°42.3'N 003°29.8'W); then in a straight line in a S'ly direction for a distance of 95m to a point on the level of high water (57°42.3'N 003°29.8'W) 100m N of the coastguard station; then by the level of high water to the point of commencement.

Berthing is permitted 2 hours before HW until 1 hour after HW

Range 1.2m to 5.0m.

There are no tugs available.

Prevailing winds: SW'ly. During strong winds, there is often a considerable sea off Burghead. During gales there may be some scend within the harbour, but with its SW aspect and the shelter afforded by the promontory, the harbour is more accessible as a port of refuge than any other harbour in the vicinity.
