Ardrossan (GBARD)

The port is Clydeport's main centre for ferry traffic and passengers. The occasional specialised Ro-Ro vessel can be handled in the port.

Ardrossan is located in the E of the Firth of Clyde, on the SW of Scotland.

Draught 3.5m.

Anchorage may be obtained in depths of 22.0-27.0m, sand, approx 1nm SW of Lighthouse Pier.

Ardrossan Harbour is approached and entered from the SW along a narrow sector marked by a direction light. Directions for entering the harbour: From the vicinity of 55°38.0'N 004° 51.0'W, the white sector (053.8° to 056°.2°) of Ardrossan approach direction light (metal framework tower, 12m in height) (55°38.7'N 004°49.1'W), leads NE towards and into the outer harbour, passing (with positions from the direction light): SE of a rock, with a depth of 5.6m over it (0.8nm WSW), which lies on a rocky and uneven spit extending 0.32nm S from Horse Isle shelves which are rocky spurs extending 0.125nm S from Horse Isle, a low islet partially covered with grass, on the S point of which stands a stone tower, then: NW of Eagle Rock (0.5nm SSW), marked by a lightbuoy (starboard hand), which lies on the SW corner of rocks and ledges of rock extending 0.23nm from the coast with Campbell Rock (0.65nm S), its S extremity, which is joined to the coast NE by Castle Craigs, then: SE of West Crinan Rock (0.4nm WSW) which is marked close S by a lightbuoy (port hand). This danger is S of several detached rocks which extend across the channel between Horse Isle and the coast E, rendering passage unsafe without local knowledge. Then: SE of Breakwater Head Light (red gantry, 1m in height) (0.27nm WSW) which stands on the S extremity of the breakwater and is powered by a submarine power cable laid across the entrance, and: NW of Lighthouse Pier (0.27nm SW) near the head of which stands Lighthouse Pier Light (white tower, 9m in height). Clearing marks: The alignment (025.75°) of the NW extremity of Lighthouse Pier with the tower of Seafield House, 0.75nm NNE, clears WNW of Eagle Rock and the associated dangers. There is a dredged depth of 5.0m in the harbour entrance, the general depths of 3.0-5.0m inside the breakwater. The entrance to Ardrossan Harbour has a width of 115m between Lighthouse Pier and the S end of the breakwater. The entrance to Eglinton Tidal Basin has a width of 53m and the entrance to Eglinton Dock (Clyde Marina) has a width of 9m between the storm gate and quay. Vessels of up to 7.8m draught can enter at HWS and 7.2m draught at HWN.

Compulsory for vessels over LOA 100m. Pilots board off Little Cumbrae Island in the vicinity of 55°43.0'N 004°59.0'W.

The seaward limits comprise a line in the Firth of Clyde due E from Corrygills Pt (55°34.3N 005°06.5'W) and a line in Kilbrannan Sound due W from Loch Ranza entrance (55°42.6'N 005°17.5'W).

Conspicuous stone tower (55°38.6'N 004°50.4'W), with 3 windows on either side, which stands on the S point of Horse Isle. Conspicuous marks at Irvine (55°36.0'N 004°42.0'W), 5.0nm SE.

Range 2.8m (springs), 1.5m (neaps).

Traffic signals (3 vertical red lights) displayed if port closed. Ardrossan is included in the Clydeport Port Operations and Information service.

Tugs available from Wijsmuller Marine Limited and Clyde Marine.

Prevailing winds: SW'ly. It is reported that the harbour is likely to be closed by gales from the SW.
