Nyanga (GANYA)

The port is small with anchorages in open sea off the mouth of River Nyanga. This port handles mainly the loading of wood logs.

Tropical.

Nyanga is situated at the mouth of the River Nyanga, approx 30nm NW of Mayumba.

Anchorage is available 2nm from the coast. Vessels loading timber from Nyanga can find anchorage in a depth of 12.0-13.0m, 1.5nm SW of the light.

The mouth of River Nyanga is situated 29nm SE of Pointe Pedras (02°58.0'S 010° 15.0'E) but for the last 2.5nm the river runs parallel to the coast behind a narrow spit of sand. The entrance is reported to be radar conspicuous and is approx 0.1nm in width, with a large shallow bar and strong currents. There are depths of 7.0m for approx 16nm upstream, or as far as some rapids, but the river is encumbered with snags and its banks are often submerged. A heavy sea runs on the bar, and there is considerable risk of capsizing when crossing it.

A light is exhibited on the shore, 1.25nm NW of the river entrance when a vessel is expected.

Range 1.0-2.3m.

Prevailing winds: Apr-Dec, S'ly; Dec-Apr, tornadoes give a large swell.
