Port Vendres (FRPOV)

The port has a sheltered harbour approach with sufficient water for entry to the berths at all states of the tide. There are facilities for commercial cargoes as well as the leisure industry. Vessels can berth alongside without the use of a tug. The main imports and exports are fruit and vegetables.

Summer Zone for ships over 100m in length and Winter Seasonal Area for ships of 100m or less in length, Winter Dec 16 to Mar 15, Summer Mar 16 to Dec 15.

Port Vendres is situated 15km from the Spanish border, on the Mediterranean coast.

Max LOA 155m, draught 8.0m.

Outer anchorage: The anchorage area lies between 0.3nm and 1nm NNE of the harbour entrance. Prohibited area: Mariners should note the prohibited anchorages extending 0.5nm NE of Mole Abri and immediately to seaward of the designated anchorage area. Anchoring and trawling are prohibited in an area, 3nm in width, extending from a position 6nm ESE of Cap Bear (42°31'N 003°08'E), to the vicinity of Canet-Plage, due to the presence of submarine cables.

Approach and entry: The port is approached from the NE, through a regulated area, and entered between Mole Abri and Pointe du Fanale. Directions: From a position 3nm N of Cap Bear Light the alignment 197.5° of Front Bear Leading Lights leads through the harbour entrance into Avant Port: Front light (red lantern, white building with grey base) 42°31'N 003°07'E. Rear light (white tower, red top, red and white chequered band). Regulated area: A regulated area extends 1nm offshore from the harbour entrance. Sailing vessels and small craft up to 20m in length are to remain clear of it unless entering the harbour or proceeding to the anchorage. Within the area these vessels must give way to warships and power driven vessels 50m or greater in length.

Master must contact pilot and Harbour Master on VHF Ch 12, 30 minutes prior to arrival at the roads, for berthing instructions.

The Compulsory Pilotage Area is bounded between the parallels of 42°28.7'N and 42°32.8'N, approx 5nm off the coast. Pilot boards 1nm N of Mole Abri Light (42°31.44'N 003°07.12'E) on the leading line. Vessels Inbound: ..... 1. Pilotage is compulsory for vessels over 45m in length and is available throughout 24 hours. 2. Vessels should send request for pilot and ETA 18 hours in advance direct or through Marseilles (FFM). 3. Contact the pilot 1 hour prior to arrival on VHF Ch 12. Vessels Outbound: 4. Vessels should send request for pilot 6 hours in advance.

Cap Bear Light (pale red pyramidal tower, grey corners 80m in height) 42°31'N 003°08'E. Pointe du Fanal Light (masonry tower, green and white bands) 42°31.3'N 003° 06.9'E. Mole Abri Light (six sided hut on white columns with red tops) 42°31.4'N 003° 07.1'E. Pointe des Pilotes Light (white metal column, green top) 42°31.2'N 003°06.8'E.

Range 0.3m.

Prevailing winds: NW'ly, E'ly. During N winds, when the current sets SE, mariners are advised to navigate slightly W of the leading line. Quai de la Presqu'ile, at the SW end of Avant Port, cannot be used safely in strong winds between N and E. Similarly the quarantine berth E of Pointe de la Presqu'ile is exposed to NW winds blowing out of Vieux Port and vessels should be moored with two anchors ahead and hawsers from the stern to posts at the foot of Redoute Bear (42°31.2'N 003°06.9'E). Mariners attempting to turn vessels within the harbour during strong winds, particularly from the NW, will find the manoeuvre difficult.
