Paimpol (FRPAI)

The port is closed for commercial operations. Information for the port is retained should the port reopen. The port no longer handles commercial traffic. It consists of 2 wet docks, which provide 1,072m of quayage. The facilities are now used mostly by yachts and fishing vessels.

Paimpol is located on the W coast of France, approx 64km W of St Malo.

LOA 80m (if both lock gates open, otherwise 58m when using lock), beam 11m and draughts of up to 4.6m at springs or 3.0m at neaps.

Anchorage is available in the roads.

Controlling depth: Approach channel 30m wide which dries 4.9m. Directions: From the anchorage at Rade de Paimpol continue on the alignment of the leading marks for Chenal de la Jument until N of Roc'h ar Zel (48°47.2'N 002°59.2'W), marked by a beacon (port hand). The track then continues generally WNW to join the alignment (262.25°) of the following Leading Lights which lead to the buoyed channel. The turn into the port round the head of Jetee de Kernoa is very sharp and difficult with a cross wind; vessels with a large turning circle should run a hawser to the end of the jetty to assist the turn.

Compulsory. In good weather the pilot boards in Anse de Brenec anchorage (48° 43'N 002°56'W), or on the line joining L'Ost Pic (48°47'N 002°56'W) to Grand Lejon, 11nm E, equidistant from the two lights. In bad weather mariners, whatever their destination, should anchor in the anchorages off I'lle a Bois (48°50'N 003°04'W).

The port limits are 1nm from Jetee de Kernoa.

Front light: Kernoa Light 48°47.1'N 003°02.4'W (white and red hut, 4m in height), at the head of Jetee de Kernoa. Rear light: Kerpalud Light (white pylon red top, 10m in height), 0.2nm W of the front mark.

Mean spring range 9.4m; mean neap range 4.6m. Tidal streams at the head of Anse de Paimpol begin as follows: ..... Interval from HW Direction Max Spring Rate Brest (Dover) (kt) -0400 W 1.5 +0100 E 1.5 The W going stream corresponds to the E going stream in the English Channel. At the entrance to the port a S going eddy runs towards Jetee de Kernoa at a rate of 0.5kt during the flood (W going) stream but ceases when the tide reaches a height of 10m.
