Gravelines (FRGRV)

The port is currently closed for commercial operations. Information for the port is retained should the port reopen. The port is used by recreational craft, fishing vessels and gives access to the French canal system.

Gravelines is located on the NW coast of France close to Dunkirk.

Max LOA 70m, beam 9.8m, max draught 2.4-3.7m depending on the tide level.

Approx 9,000t of imports and exports are handled annually.

Anchorage available off the entrance to the port in depths of between 6.0-10.0m, sand/shells with good holding ground. Prohibited anchorage is between the jetty heads and in the area between Beacons No 5 and 7 and Beacons No 7 and 10.

West jetty: Light on a stone support. East Jetty: Light on a metal construction, Fl(3)R2s. Approach and entry: The port is approached from the Passe de l'Ouest, then through the entrance to the Riviere Aa, which is formed by two jetties, then the river itself to Gravelines. The ENE going stream is at its max rate at HW Gravelines and larger vessels normally enter Gravelines approx 30 minutes before local HW. Due allowance must be made for the cross tidal stream as the entrance is approached, keeping well up to the head of Jettee Ouest. Because of the frequent changes in the banks and channel entry is difficult and should not be attempted in rough seas. Fresh onshore winds may make entry difficult. The channel is approx 15m in width and marked by numbered beacons. It winds between the sand and mud banks, which lie on either side within the jetties, and leads to the tidal basin at Gravelines. The basin dries and lies at an angle of 60° to the channel.The tidal basin, 50m in width but wider at its S end to enable vessels to turn, leads to the lock gate which access to Bassin Vauban. The sill of the gate is 0.6m above CD and the lock is 10m in width and 28m in length. A second smaller lock is not used. At neaps the gate is operated from 45 minutes before to 45 minutes after local HW and at springs 1.5 hours after local HW. There are tide gauges giving depth over the lock sill either side of the lock and at the landing steps in Bassin Vauban.

Pilotage is compulsory and available from Dunkirk Pilot Station (51°04'N 002° 22'E).

The port limits extend the extremities of the jetties.

Lighthouse and church of the Grand-Fort-Philippe and of Petit-Fort-Philippe.

Lock Vauban, contact VHF Ch 09. Access to Basin Vauban: At every high tide, from 3 hours before up to 3 hours after high tide. Tidal basin: Modifications are possible according to demand. Outside the high season, weekends and holidays: Same as above. High tide during the night: Possible, please contact lock master or harbour supervisor the day before entry. Otherwise normal timetable min 1.5 hours before up to 1.5 hours after high tide. In strong winds the swing bridge cannot be operated and entry into the basin is impossible.
