Lautoka is situated on the NW coast of the island of Viti Levu, the largest island in the Fiji group.

Harbour: LOA 330m, beam 39m, draught 10.4m, 70,000DWT. Off Shore: LOA 184.95m, BCM 95m, draught 11.5m, 51,768DWT.

Approximate 3,350,000t of cargo, 38,000 TEU and 400 vessels are handled annually.

Quarantine anchorage, with a radius of 0.15nm and depths of 22.0-24.0m, lies approx 1nm W of the light beacon off the N extremity of Vio Island and 0.5nm E of Pinder Reefs. Anchorage for vessels awaiting a berth can be obtained in depths of 13.0-19.0m, mud, in the channel between Bekana Island and the coast SE.

Directions for S approach to Lautoka: From the vicinity of Vuda Point (17° 41.0'S 177°23.0'E) the track leads N and NE, passing (positions relative to Vuda Point): E of Catlow Reef Beacon (3nm WNW) possibly missing, then W of Naikorokoro Light (1.75nm N), then NW of Naikorokoro Point (2.75nm N) which is densely wooded and marked by a beacon (triangle topmark), and SE of a group of straggling reefs (4.5nm NNW on which lie Pascoe Cay and Tivoa Islet), then NW of the seaward end of a submarine pipeline (4.5nm NNE). Then the track leads either to the quarantine anchorages, situated approx 0.5nm E of Pinder Reefs (017°36.0'S 177°25.0'E), which dry and are marked at each end by a beacon, or NE into the inshore passage N of Viti Levu. The fairway between Vio Island and Lautoka has a least navigable width of 140m and a least depth of 9.4m. Directions for entry: S entrance: Approaching the berths from S, the track leads ENE and N, passing S of a beacon marking the reef's edge on the S side of Vio Island, then close E of a light beacon (concrete pile) marking the reef's edge off the SE extremity of Vio Island. Then the track leads to the berths. N entrance: Approaching the berths from N, the track leads round the N end of Vio Island, passing N of a light beacon (grey concrete pile) and a beacon (white triangular topmark) standing close together on the edge of the reef off the N extremity of Vio Island and S of a light beacon (white round concrete pedestal), possibly extinguished, (0.5nm NNE) marking the S end of Bekana (Mbekana) Island which is covered with mangroves. Then the track leads to the berths; deep draught vessels should beware of shoal patches, with a least depth of 8.8m, which exist 0.1-0.2nm NNW of Queen's Wharf. A dredged channel, 20m in width, runs E into the fishing port round the end of the breakwater. It is marked by 2 conical lightbuoys along its N side.

Port limits: Liverpool Harbour: Situated SW of Fort Point, approached and entered by a dredged channel. A bridge crosses the harbour at its head, approx 0.5nm SW of Fort Point. At the NW end of the bridge a public pier extends NE. An oil depot and a fish plant are located at the beginning of this pier. The town is not visible from seaward. Brooklyn Harbour: The harbour, protected by a breakwater, the outer part of which is in ruins, extends 0.15nm SW from the E side of the entrance to Herring Cove. The AbitibiBowater Paper Co. is located on the W side of the entrance to the cove and a newsprint loading pier extends approx 168m SE. The lumber loading pier extends about Moose Harbour (44°01'N 64°40'W) is a small cove with a fish plant at the head, located to W side of Moose Point. There is a small breakwater extending N but there is little shelter during strong E winds and the area is very shallow. Sea buoys, fairways and channels: Liverpool Bay is entered between Eastern Head (44°02'N 064°39'W) and Moose Point, 1.5nm SSW. Liverpool Harbour is located at the head of the bay, SW of Fort Point (44°03N 064°42).  Depths in the buoyed channel into Liverpool Harbour are reported to be 3.3m. The are in the approach to Herring Cove has a depth of 6.4m. Both areas are subject to silting and masters are advised make local enquiries for the latest information. Entry to Liverpool Harbour: From a position approx 0.25nm NE of Fort Point a dredged channel is marked on its outer end by "UM53" Lightbuoy (green, port hand) and then by lightbuoys and buoys (port and starboard hand), leading SW to the public pier. Caution: Rails extend into the dredged channel from a patent slip situated approx 0.25nm SW of Fort Point at the NE end of the shipyard quay. Entry to Brooklyn: The leading lights (privately maintained) have now been removed from near the outer end of the newsprint loading wharf. However, the structures of these former leading lights are still in place. The alignment of these (353°) leads through the dredged approach area to the Bowater Mersey Paper Company's quays. Pilot: Pilotage is not compulsory. Licensed pilots are available on request, via any coast radio station to "Pilots Halifax", 24 hours notice is required. ETA 24 hours in advance to Atlantic Pilotage Authority (ETD 4 hours in advance). The pilot boarding position is situated approx 0.9nm SSE of Eastern Head in position 44°01'.57N 64°38'.92W.  The pilot boat is silver grey in colour and has no special identification markings.  Anchorages: There is good holding in 26m in a position near the pilot boarding station, approx 1.0nm respectively from Coffin Island and Eastern Head and 0.6nm from Moose Point. A good anchorage is located in 13m, mud, midway between Spectacle Islands and Mink Island or closer inshore towards the beach, for vessels with a shallower draught. Vessels may also anchor in the area around Forbes Point, in depths of approx 13.0m, but clear of "UM50" Buoy.  There is anchorage with good holding, mud, W of Brooklyn Breakwater in approx 5.5m. Both these anchorage are susceptible to sea and swell. To the SW, there is an anchorage in 13m, 0.5nm NW of Bull Point in the small bay off the village of South West Port Mouton. This provides good holding in mud but is exposed to considerable swell in strong E winds. Vessels using this anchorage and constrained by draught, should approach from the N and should be aware of shoals, least depth 6.7m, which are located at the entrance to the bay. Tidal range and flow: Mean spring range is about 2.2m, mean neap range is about 1.0m. The flow of water from the Mersey River into Liverpool Harbour various in strength. Dock density: 1025. Weather: Prevailing winds: SW'ly. Gales from the S and E send considerable seas and swell into Liverpool Bay. For this reason, vessels unable to enter Liverpool Harbour or Brooklyn are advised to void the bay, especially in the autumn and winter. Principal navigation aids: Disused light structure (white tower, 9m high) on Fort Point (2.5nm W of Easter Head). Two prominent towers 3nm WNW of Eastern Head. Restrictions: The harbour is spanned at its head by a bridge, (0.5nm SW of Fort Point), vertical clearance 1.8m. Tugs: There are 2 small tugs available.

The coastal waters are normally patrolled by the Fiji Navy.

Pilotage is compulsory. Send ETA at least 24 hours in advance to deputy Port Master. Pilot vessel is available on 2182kHz, 2638kHz RT and VHF Ch 06 and 16. Hours, Mon-Thu 0800-1630hrs; Fri 0800-1600hrs, Sat 0800-1200hrs local time and by arrangement. Pilot boards approx 25nm S of Lautoka in Navula Passage.

The harbour limits of Lautoka extend: N to Rava Reef (17°33.0'S 177°27.0'E), W to Covuli (17°35.0'S 177°25.0'E), Pascoe Cay (17°36.0'S 177°22.0'E) and Catlow Reef (17°40.0'S 177°20.0'E), S to a position 3nm S of Catlow Reef.

Lights between Vuda Point (17°41.0'S 177°24.0'E) and Lautoka Harbour are: Naikorokoro Light (17°39.0'S 177°23.0'E). Light Beacon (17°36.5'S 171°26.1'E) off SW point of Vio Island.

Discharge of explosives is to be carried out immediately after berthing and in daylight hours only.

Range 1.67m. Tidal streams set along the line of the wharves.

Two tugs, with bollard pull of 12t and 38t, are available. The services of more powerful tugs can be arranged from Suva by prior notice.

ETA should be advised to the vessel's agent 72 hours prior to arrival. Further ETA's should be sent 48, 24, 12 and 6 hours prior to arrival. The messages, in addition to date and time of arrival information, should also include any requirements and health condition of crew and passengers.

Vessels to fly Fiji's national flag.

Vessel operations are governed by the Port Authority and Maritime Regulations, copies of which are obtainable.

Health Authorities require that the vessel cables details of ports visited within 50 days of arrival. This should be sent with the 48 hour ETA message. Details to be sent to Port Health Authority, Fax: +679 313568. Radio pratique will be granted to a vessel which has not visited a port in a malarial area within 50 days. The Authorities will board, inspect and spray a vessel which has visited a malarial port. Such a vessel will not be allowed to berth at night. A Quarantine Officer will sight Maritime Declaration of Health and Ship Sanitation Control Certificate on boarding. Vessel must anticipate delays since Port Health board at quarantine anchorage from 1 hour before sunrise to 1 hour after sunset. No further pratique formalities are required in Fiji other than at the first port of entry.
