Palma (ESPMI)

The island is the largest of the Balearic Archipelago with Palma being the most important city and port. The port is divided into four areas, the commercial quays, the marinas, Ponente Quay, Ribera Quay and Oest Dock which include naval, commercial, fishing and yachting activities.

Palma de Mallorca is situated on the SW coast of Majorca, in the N of Bahia de Palma.

Largest vessel handled (LOA): Passenger/Cruise 'Symphony of the Seas' LOA 361.11m, Beam 47.03m, draught 9.32m. Largest vessel handled (DWT): "Mostoles" LOA 243m, draught 14.32m, 75,395DWT. Tankers: LOA 183m, draught 12.0m. .

Approx 3,100 vessels, 9,330,000t of cargo, 90,000TEU and 2,600,000 passengers (cruise & ferry) handled annually.

Deep draught vessels: Can obtain an anchorage E of the harbour entrance in the vicinity of the meridian which passes through the cathedral (002°39'E) in depths of 14.0 or 15.0m, taking care to avoid impeding entry to the harbour and clear of the submarine outfall. Dangerous cargo anchorage: A designated dangerous cargo anchorage lies centred about 1nm SE of the harbour entrance. Nuclear vessel anchorage: Anchorage A, lying in the SE corner of the dangerous cargo anchorage. This is reserved for nuclear vessels. Prohibited anchorage: Lies close E of the dangerous cargo anchorage. Anchorage and trawling are prohibited in an area on the W side of the approaches to the port. Anchoring is also prohibited within the harbour.

The port is approached through Bahia de Palma and entered between the heads of Dique del Oeste and Dique de Levante. From the pilot boarding station (39° 31.67'N 002°38.41'E), the route leads N for about 1.25nm to the harbour entrance. Light (red upright rectangle on red round tower, white hut, 13m in height) (39°33.2'N 002°38.4'E) standing on the head of Dique del Oeste. Light (black column, yellow band, on hut, 10m in height) standing on the outer elbow of Dique del Oeste, 300m S of the light described above. Light (black column, yellow top, on hut, 8.0m in height), obscured inside the harbour, standing on the inner elbow of Dique del Oests, 0.55nm SW of the head of the breakwater. Light (green triangle on green column, white hut) standing on the SW head of Dique de Lavante, 0.45nm NNW of the head of Dique del Oeste. Light (red pyramidal column, green band) standing on the head of Muelles de Poniente, 0.3nm W of the head of Dique del Oests.

Maximum tidal range 0.2m.

Prevailing winds: The prevailing winds in the vicinity of the port are NE and SW during the summer and NE and NW in the winter. Very heavy NW squalls are sometimes experienced. Strong winds from S and SW are prone to raise a considerable sea in winter however winds from the S are shorter in duration and less frequent. The swell is often felt before the wind that causes it.
