A large commercial and fishing port catering for general and bulk cargoes. It has ship repair facilities, including slipways, floating docks and repair quays.

Pasajes the E most port on the N coast of Spain lies approx 5nm W of the frontier with France and 3nm E of the city of San Sebastian.

Pasaia is an alternative name for Pasajes.

LOA 185m, draught 9.3m, beam 30.0m, 39,202DWT.

Approx 3,000,000t of cargo, 900 vessels and 200 passengers handled annually.

Vessels may anchor, in good weather E of 001°55.7'W in depths of 35 to 60m, mud and sand. Pilots should be informed of intention to anchor.

Entrance channel: leading lights lead through the entrance mouth, width 180m and depth 20.0m LWS and into the 1,200m long channel, dredged to 10m LWS with widths of 80-120m. The White Sector of the Senocozulua Directional Light leads SSE through the outermost charted fairway. When the directional and leading lights are all in line this indicates WSW edge of the fairway. The dredged channel then continues SSE through the narrowest part of the pass and then turns S into the harbour. Caution: In heavy seas vessel's bows are liable to sheer to starboard upon passing the entrance points, a turn to port is necessary to remain following the channel.

Compulsory and available 24 hours from Corporacion de Practicos del Puerto de Pasajes. Pilots embark, weather permitting, 1nm N of the entrance on leading line. In bad weather instructions may be given by VHF and pilot will board inside the entrance.

The port is bounded by a line from Punta del Arando Grande (43°20.2'N 001° 55.6'W) to Punta del Arando Chico (0.1nm W).

Cabo La Plata Lighthouse (Oc W 4s 13M), in position 43°20'N 001°56'W. Senocozulua Leading and Direction Light/s (W, R, G).

Three tugs available from 1,075-3,300hp. Vessels lines are used. For entering and leaving port one tug is used for vessels exceeding LOA 110m without bow thrusters or LOA 130m for vessels with bow thrusters. Two tugs are used for all vessels over LOA 140m.

Prevailing winds: Spring and summer, N'ly; autumn and winter, NW/SW'ly. The strongest winds are experienced from the NW. The port is closed in heavy fog which may occur in the mornings in spring and autumn.

One way Traffic in Channel: Vessels are not permitted to enter the dredged channel (43°19.9'N 001°55.4'W) if it is being used by a vessel proceeding in the opposite direction. Entry to the channel is controlled by traffic light signals from an inward and outward tower. Maximum length of vessels berthing in the E basin is 160m.

Pratique normally obtained on arrival. In case of any suspected disease or fever onboard, advise agents in advance. Ship Sanitation Control Certificates and Exemption Certificates renewed.
