Mahon (ESMAH)

The port has regular passenger and freight services to Palma and Barcelona. The E and W docks handle passenger traffic and cruise vessels. Commercial traffic is now handled in the Cos Nou Dock which has 3 Ro-Ro ramps.

The port of Mahon is situated at the head of an inlet 2.6nm in length, on the SE coast of Menorca, one of the Balearic Islands.

LOA 276m, draught 9.9m, 55,451DWT.

Approx 666,000t of cargo, 5,800TEU, 470 vessels and 195,000 passengers handled annually.

Contact Practicos de Mahon to drop anchor in the estuary. In good weather anchorage may be attained off the harbour entrance in depths of 24.0-37m, good holding in sand. Clot de la Mola (39°52.4'N 004°18.8'E), a small cove, should only be used in an emergency. Within the harbour anchorage may be obtained almost anywhere, subject to draught, the greatest area being La Plana, W of Isla del Rey. Vessels carrying explosives and dangerous cargo can obtain anchorage in the entrance of Cala Llonga, 0.3nm NE of Isla del Rey. Anchorage is prohibited N of Isla Cuarentena (Isla Plana) (39°53.0'N 004° 18.0'E) due to submarine power cable laid across the channel.

Approach and entry: The approach is made from the open sea S of La Mola and entered between Laja de Fuera and Laja de San Carlos. Caution: Mariners approaching the port from the N in bad weather should take great care not to mistake the isthmus for the entrance to Puerto de Mahon, as there is a risk of running aground. Harbour entrance leading SE. Entrance width 180m, depth 10.0m. Mahon channel characteristics: Width 180m, length 5,200m, water depth 15.0m, bottom mud.

For sea rescue a launch "Salvamar Antares" is available. VHF Ch 16 through Menorca Radio.

Compulsory for vessels over 500GT. Pilotage service available throughout 24 hours. Contact Practicos de Mahon (Mahon Pilots) on VHF Ch 14 or 16. The pilot vessel displays a blue square flag with the letter 'P' in white on it.
