Garrucha (ESGAR)

It is a sheltered port protected by breakwaters. The entrance has a width of 120m and a depth of 9.5m. The port mainly handles gypsum.

North Atlantic Winter Seasonal Zone II, Winter Nov 1 to Mar 31, Summer Apr 1 to Oct 31.

Garrucha is situated approx 70km NE of Almeria.

LOA 200m, draught 8.5m.

Anchorage can be obtained 0.2-0.25nm off the centre of the town in depths of 15.0-30m in line with the S arm of the Dique de Levante. Care must be taken to avoid anchoring too far from the coast as the 100m line run N/S only 0.3nm from the E of the harbour entrance. Vessels should take soundings before anchoring. When a NE or E wind prevails in the offing, but not of gale force, it is said that the wind in the anchorage will be N; and when the wind is SW or W in the offing, that it will be NW in the anchorage. A recommended anchorage can be obtained close N of Puerto de Garrucho off La Bolaga, in depths of 14.0m, sand and weed. The caution regarding depths close offshore, described above, are also applicable here. Another anchorage can be obtained approximately 1.5nm NE of Dique de Levante in a depth of about 30m. Anchorage can also be obtained in the vicinity of the mouth of the Rio de Aguas, about 1.5nm S of Puerto de Garrucha, in depths of 20.0 to 50m.The anchorage is safe only in good weather and should be abandoned as soon as there are indications of onshore winds developing. Approach and entry: The harbour approached and entered from the open sea. The heads of the breakwaters should be given a wide berth as they are surrounded by stone blocks.

Garrucha Lighthouse 37°10.5'N 001°49.4'W. Light (white round tower, 11m in height) standing on the head of Dique de Levante, 0.5nm NE of Garrucha Light. Light (red truncated tower, 3m in height), standing on the head of Dique de Poniente, 0.6nm NNE of Garrucha Light.

Range 0.3m.

There are 2 tugs available, compulsory for vessels over LOA 110m, or 3,500DWT and over.
