Alcanar (ESACA)

The port is a commercial harbour at Puerto Cargadero de Alcanar (40°34'N 000° 33'E) serving a cement factory onshore. There is also a harbour for yachts and fishing craft at Las Casas de Alcanar (40°33'N 000°32'E). Puerto Cargadero de Alcanar harbour lies on the inshore side of an "L" shaped breakwater (Dique Exterior) extending SE and ENE from the shore. Dique Interior extends parallel to the ENE extension of Dique Exterior about 0.125nm inshore of it.

Alcanar is located on the E coast of Spain, near to Tarragona.

Largest Vessel: Bulk Carrier "Crystal Palace". LOA190m, beam 32.3m. Arrival draught 7.2m (Max draught 12.83m), 58,781DWT.

There are three designated anchorages: Within a circle of radius 0.45nm centred 1.5nm ESE from the harbour. Within an area extending for about 0.1nm NNE from Punta Corballera, centred 2nm ENE from the harbour. Within a circle of radius 0.5nm centred 3.5nm SE from the harbour.

The harbour is approached and entered direct from the open sea through a channel, marked by light buoys (lateral), and entered about 0.25nm NW of the fairway light buoy (safe water) (40°32'.0N 000°35'.4E). Reportedly, the minimum depth is 10.3m but Masters should check latest information with the Port Authority as sea conditions result in transport and deposition of sand and sediment.

Pilotage is compulsory for all vessels over 500GT and is available 24 hours. The pilot vessel is white with black 'P' on the hull; the pilot boarding ground lies close to the fairway buoy. Pilots can be contacted by VHF and are available from San Carlos de la Rapita.

Vessels should be aware of shell fish farming areas in the Alcanar area, two of which are located approx 1.0nm directly South of the Outer Pier.
